reflected in the larger acreages that men farm. As in all the other settlements men still farm significantly larger areas than<br />

women. At Buoku the average acreage women had under crop was 3.75 acreas (Std 2.737) as compared to 8.75 (Std14.55)<br />

for men - but with considerable variation between different types <strong>of</strong> men (See Figure 1.3) 5 . In l<strong>and</strong> scarce areas, young men<br />

may seek to gain access to l<strong>and</strong> through circuits other than the family. This also has implications for the family as a farming<br />

unit <strong>and</strong> suggests the emergence <strong>of</strong> more individual based farming strategies (Amanor, 2000).<br />

5 Caution is needed in presenting mean areas cultivated, since this is distorted by a few farmers with much larger l<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

tendency for some <strong>of</strong> the rich to exaggerate their wealth <strong>and</strong> the extent <strong>of</strong> their farms to reaffirm their importance.
