4.4.8.4 Installed gaskets shall meet mating edges or surfaces<br />
evenly, shall have no high spots and shall not protrude excessively.<br />
4.4.8.5 Replacement gasket materials shall be of equal or<br />
superior quality to the gasket replaced.<br />
4.4.9 Lenses and Optical Surfaces. Optical components<br />
shall be inspected on a frequent periodic basis for damage and<br />
deterioration. If degradation is sufficient to seriously affect the<br />
function (or appearance, if essential) of the component, repair<br />
or replacement shall be conducted. Repair or replacement shall<br />
be in accordance with best manufacturing practices, the equipment<br />
system specific maintenance manual, <strong>TO</strong> 31-1-75, and<br />
any other approved <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> procedures and methods for the<br />
component under repair. Additional specific requirements are:<br />
4.4.9.1 Mirrors, ground glass, optical surfaces, etc. will be<br />
clean, firmly mounted and free from cracks, scratches or significant<br />
discoloration. Minor defects shall be permissible<br />
where they do not interfere with or degrade the normal function<br />
and operation of the associated equipment.<br />
4.4.9.2 Optical systems such as viewfinders, rangefinders,<br />
enlargers, projectors, viewers, etc. shall be aligned and<br />
adjusted in accordance with equipment manufacturer's specifications<br />
and the equipment system specific maintenance manual.<br />
4.4.9.3 Lens elements shall be fastened securely and accurately<br />
in their mounts.<br />
4.4.9.4 There shall be no evidence of foreign material on or<br />
between optical element surfaces (lenses, mirrors, etc.). All<br />
optical element surfaces shall be cleaned in accordance with<br />
original equipment manufacturer specifications and the equipment<br />
system specific maintenance manual.<br />
4.4.10.1 Paper labels shall be mounted in accordance with<br />
procedures in Chapter 2 of <strong>TO</strong> 31-1-75.<br />
4.4.10.2 Labels other than paper and decals shall be securely<br />
and firmly mounted using screws or rivets.<br />
4.5 DEGRADATION PREVENTION.<br />
4.5.1 Weather. All reasonable precautions shall be taken to<br />
protect equipment and materials from exposure to direct sunlight,<br />
humidity and/or temperature extremes, precipitation, or<br />
other hostile environmental conditions (e.g., corrosive atmospheres,<br />
dust, harsh chemicals, etc.). Protection shall include:<br />
avoidance of damaging environments when possible; use of<br />
approved protective coatings, sealants, enclosures, containers<br />
or shrouds; and frequent periodic inspections followed by<br />
immediate maintenance and remediation using procedures in<br />
the equipment system specific maintenance manuals, instructions<br />
found elsewhere in this manual, MIL-HDBK-454, <strong>TO</strong>s<br />
1-1-689-series, 1-1-691, 00-25-234, 31-1-69, 31-1-75, 35E4-<br />
1-162, and 00-25-108, and all specifications and drawings pertinent<br />
to maintenance on the equipment in question when damage<br />
or deterioration is detected.<br />
4.5.2 Damage. Frequent periodic inspections for damage<br />
shall be conducted and followed by immediate repair actions<br />
in accordance with all appropriate equipment system specific<br />
maintenance manuals, instructions found elsewhere in this<br />
manual, MIL-HDBK-454, <strong>TO</strong>s 1-1-689-series, 1-1-691, 00-<br />
25-234, 31-1-69, 31-1-75, 35E4-1-162, and 00-25-108, and all<br />
specifications and drawings pertinent to maintenance on the<br />
equipment in question.<br />
4.5.3 Normal Wear. Equipment shall be used in accordance<br />
with all appropriate operation and maintenance instructions to<br />
provide optimum performance and obtain maximum useful<br />
service life.<br />
4.4.10 Labels. Labels shall be inspected on a frequent periodic<br />
basis for damage and deterioration. Specific requirements<br />
