Remove spilled electrolyte<br />

immediately by flushing with<br />

fresh water. Spray the contaminated<br />

area with Litmus solution<br />

(Refer to <strong>TO</strong> 1-1-691, Chapter<br />

7). Neutralize the area by sponging<br />

or spraying with sodium<br />

bicarbonate solution. Apply<br />

generously until bubbling stops<br />

and the Litmus solution turns<br />

blue. Let it stay on the surface<br />

for 5 minutes, but do not allow<br />

to dry. Brush with a fiber bristle<br />

brush, then flush with fresh<br />

water. Reapply the Litmus solution<br />

to determine if all electrolyte<br />

has been neutralized.<br />

Retreat the area as required and<br />

rinse. Dry with clean wiping<br />

clothes. Keep the cell vents open<br />

but do not allow an solutions to<br />

enter the cells. Preserve compartment<br />

with MIL-PRF-81309,<br />

Type II, Class 1 or 2 or MIL-L-<br />

87177, Type I or II, Grade B<br />

CPC. Do not paint or preserve<br />

batteries.<br />
