was in its ninth week at the Studio.
"Samson and Delilah" opened strong at the
NFB Employes Approved
On Loyalty by Police
OTTA'WA—Completion by the Mounted Police
of security screening of National Film
Board employes has cleared the staff of any
suspicion of espionage, and it is stated that
Robert H. 'Winters, chairman of the board,
has informed Defense Minister Claxton that
the board can safely be used by the defense
department and all other government departments
for film work of a confidential nature.
An early appropriation is expected for a new
film storage building to be built in Ottawa
as the first unit of a $2,000,000 building to
house all the National Film Board activities.
VANCOUVER
Calmon Arm. B. C.. will have an outdoor
theatre this summer. William Foster of
Vernon is building a drive-in two miles east
of town, and it is expected to be operating
by May 24. This will be the fifth drive-in
to be erected in the Okanagan fruit belt of
the province. Others are located at Kelowna.
Penticton. Kamloops and Vernon, and the
operators are said to be planning cooperative
booking and buying, which would result in
a great saving in express charges, now a
large item.
Cecil Black, JARO western Canada supervisor,
has resigned and returned east. The
position has been abolished . on inspection
trips were Oscar Hanson. Canadian
head of Monogram, and David Griesdorf,
Odeon Theatres general manager . . . Howard
Boothe, Odeon British Columbia district head,
returned from a three-week vacation in Arizona
... It was said that Lloyd Muir. former
RKO publicity man, will manage the
new Ridge Theatre here . Dalgleish.
WB manager, and Harry Woolfe, UA manager,
were away on selling trips.
Conditions in the Okanagan fruit belt this
summer apparently will not be as favorable
as those in other years. Apricot and peach
crops were hit by the severe winter which
killed the buds, and the cherry supply will
be far below normal. Not only the growers
and shippers will be affected, but also the
canners, box manufacturers and all types of
labor. Business in general in the area will
be affected.
The new Skyway Drive-In being built by
Industries Inland Co. near Kamloops will
open in April with a capacity of 500 cars
new Capitol at Ponoka, on the
Calgary-Edmonton line, was opened last week
new outdoor theatre being built by
Tisman & Mcintosh near Chilliwack in the
FYaser Valley is well under way and will be
ready for opening in May . Soo Theatre
at Weyburn, Saskatchewan, was opened
recently . . . Les Toffey has completely renovated
his Ladner Theatre at Ladner. B. C,
a farming community 24 miles from Vancouver.
Ernest Lay, local hotel operator who runs
the Roxy here, has leased the Rio Theatre
at Victoria from Hymie Singer. Now closed,
the house will be opened in March. Pat
Patanaur of the Roxy here will be in charge
of the Rio, a 500-seater.
The alltime record for a film in Vancouver
is held by "Lost Boundaries," currently in
tenth week at the downtown Studio Theatre
its
and still going strong. Another sur-
prise is "Quartet" in its second run at the
Park Theatre, where it is doing big business.
The Arthur Rank film drew poorly in
its first run downtown. Gordon Monro, Odeon
publicity chief, gave "Quartet' an excellent
publicity buildup which is paying off at the
Park Theatre boxoffice.
Perry Ferguson has been signed as art director
on the United Artists film. "The Sound
of Fury."
Quebec City to Appeal
QUEBEC — City authorities will appeal
to the supreme court of Canada against a
Quebec appeal court judgment invalidating
the appointment of a manager for Palais
Montcalm, municipal civic center. The Quebec
court ruled that the appointment of Theo
Genest as Palais Montcalm manager was
invalid because city authorities failed to consult
a municipal promotions committee
operating under a collective agreement between
the city and its employes. City officials
said that pending outcome of the supreme
court hearing. Genest will remain at
his Palais Montcalm post.
Screen rights to "Bonaventure," a play
running in London, have been acquired for
