•The Lakeside, B&K theatre on the north
side, is receiving a new sound and projector
system, new Dalite plastic screen, new
Whiteway canopy, new boxoffice and a modernized
lounge . Walders. former
manager for UA at Cleveland who has been
at Paramount here, has replaced Nat Nathanson
here, who recently was appointed eastern
and Canadian general sales manager for
Paramount.
Jack Barry, for the last several years country
salesman for PRC and Henri Elman Enterprises,
has joined the Film Classics here
as country salesman . Mack has
returned from a business trip in Detroit area
. . . Ralph Smitha, general manager, reports
Essaness theatres have secured 22.000 signatures,
and 12.000 letters from patrons protesting
the admission tax. James Gulano.
manager of the Bertha Theatre, supervised
the drive . . . The Crown and Buckingham
theatres are being renovated inside and out
by Essaness.
Walter A. Dietze of Local 110 died last week
was going good at the Carnegie
Theatre on the near north side. It began
its general neighborhood release March
1 . . . The Monroe was showing "The Outlaw"
with "TeU It to the Judge." James
Jovan said business was good despite the
snow ... Ed Seguin's Florida tan faded fast
when he faced the pile of vifork in his B&K
desk on returning from a Miami holiday.
There are big doings ahead for the Chicago
Theatre, including a world premiere of "Wabash
Avenue" March 31, a one-week appearance
for Carmen Miranda April 14, followed
by Frankie Laine.
. . . Al Simon's restaurant,
Columbia's next release for Chicago territory
is "No Sad Songs for Me" . . . Balaban
& Katz is trying out popcorn with real butter
at 20 cents a box
the meeting and eating rendezvous
on Filmrow, is holding open house (3-10) to
celebrate his 13th anniversary with a buffet
and entertainment from 6 p. m.
Morrie Salkin still is at Michael Reese recuperating
from his illness and wants to
thank all his pals on Filmrow, etc., for the
many get-well cards and phone calls . . . Due
to the coal shortage, public schools will only
operate four days a week giving the young-
sters an extra day to attend the amusement
spots . . . Birthday greetings to Nat Nathanson,
Dick Sachsel, Jack Kaplan, Gerald
Weiss, Milton Banovitz and Abe Teitel.
Bob Kaufman, former 20th-Fox exploiteer,
was in helping E. V. Fitzgibbon. Paramount's
publicist, on the "Samson and Delilah" opening
at the State-Lake . . . Cecil DeMille was
in town to help launch Red Cross drive. He
delivered the principal address at the dinner
in the Stevens hotel attended by Mayor Kennelly
and over 1.000 civic leaders and guests
from all industries . . . The American Popcorn
Co, has opened a nationwide newspaper advertising
campaign boosting popcorn sales
Stern, E.ssaness vice-president who
retired last month, is living in Palm Spring.,
for winter.
Kenneth Norberg, formerly with EBF films,
has joined Chicago university as director of
the audio-visual center . Krueger, producer
of "The Golden Gloves Story," due for
its world premiere at the Oriental March 23,
and Herb Elisburg, who is lending Jim Booth
a hand in establishing the Oriental's new
management, went to school together. They
attended Hyde Park High school the same
period during the early 1920s, though they
didn't know each other then.
Patrons Make Suggestions
RIPON, WIS.—Suggestions are being made
by local theatregoers to S&M Theatres as to
what patrons would like to see incorporated
into the new theatre the company plans to
build here soon. S&M now operates the
Campus and Ripon theatres here. Some of
the suggestions call for a section set aside
for smokers, another enclosed section of
candy crunchers and cry rooms for babies.
A site has been purchased by S&M for the
new house and construction is slated to start
in a few weeks.
Speakers at Limberlost
GENEVA, IND.—Clyde Nihiser, manager
of the Limberlost Drive-In here, has contracted
for new individual car speakers for
the ozoner. The theatre operated without
them last year due to the lateness of the
drive-in opening.
