Last-Minute Booking Of Iwo Jima' Is Given Smart Campaign A last-minute booking of "Sands of Iwo Jima" gave Doug Smith, manager of the Casino Theatre. Halifax. N. S.. only two days to get his campaign into action. He nevertheless accomplished a lot in that short time. Spots were put on the air immediately. Envelopes were ordered imprinted with copy. "This is sand from Iwo Jima, etc." As these came off the press, sand was inserted in each one and they were distributed by theatre employes. Lobby signs and displays were placed outside the theatre, and a 15-foot banner was placed next to a six-sheet in a prominent window on one of the town's busiest streets. On the first two days of the run, martial music was piped through a speaker placed on the theatre marquee. The second day of the run, a parade of army cadets marched to the theatre where they put on a demonstration of military precision exercises. Gets 'Lover Co-Op William Harwell, manager of the Palace, Lorain, Ohio, promoted a full-page newspaper cooperative ad on "The Great Lover." Advertisers on the page keyed their copy to "Special Sales for 'The Great Lover' of Bargains." Each ad included a reverse block with the title of the picture, and Harwell used a four-column display ad at the top of the page. Brotherhood Bonus Deadhne Extended Announcement of the winner of the special BOXOFFICE Bonus for Brotherhood wêek will be made next month. Originally scheduled for the March 11 issue of BOX- OFFICE, an early press date for the Showmandiser section and delay in movement of mail caused by inclement weather in some sections of the country prompted this decision. By postponing the announcement until April, every exhibitor will be afforded an opportunity to submit his entry for the Brotherhood Bonus. Campaigns and a copy of the enrollment form mailed to the regional Brotherhood chairman should be forwarded to the Showmandiser section, BOXOFFICE, 9 Rockefeller Plaza, New York 20, N. Y. Aids Scout Week Julius Lamm, manager of the Uptown in Cleveland, tied up with Boy Scout week in behalf of "The Great Lover." Sixty-five Boy Scouts paraded to the theatre on opening day, with a banner reading, "We're on our way to see Cleveland's own Bob Hope in 'The Great Lover.' " etc. 'Sundowners' Stars On Brief Stop Net Publicity Splurge By his alert showmanship, Don Klock, publicity manager for the State, Lyceum and Mesa theatres in Clovis, N. M., promoted an unscheduled event and a generous quantity of newspaper publicity in behalf of the regional premiere of "The Sundowners" a.\, the local State Theatre. Although the picture was scheduled to open with other theatres in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, special activities centering around Hollywood star appearances were slated for Amarillo, Tex. Learning that the stars would be passing through Clovis, hub of the Santa Fe lines, en route to Amarillo, Klock wired Leon Brandt, Eagle Lion publicity director who was on the train, asking if there would be a short stopover in Clovis and requesting permission to stage an impromptu welcome for the visitors. Brandt okayed the stunt and Klock moved into action, contacting the newspapers and radio station. Broadcasters immediately began bombarding the air-waves with spot announcements informing the citizens of Clovis that the stars would be in town and urging them to be at the depot. But Clovis newspapers had photographers and reporters on hand, and when the stars stepped from the train they were presented promoted bouquets of flowers by a group of more than 250 people who had gathered.
