"The First Name in Fluorescence'
Zone Air Conditioning for A Small Theatre
One of the newest theatres completed
in southern Wisconsin is at Lodi
where two separate heating and cooling
systems have been installed. One system
heats the 500-seat auditoriimi whUe the
second one accommodates the foyer, lobby
and theatre office at the front end of the
building. Both systems are oil fired, using
No. 3 fuel oil.
In the auditorium a horizontal heater,
of the return-tube type, possesses a fire
travel four times the length of the heater.
The blower circulates 13,000 cubic feet of
air a minute. Heater surfaces are finned
for maximum efficiency. All air circulated
is drawn from outdoors through air filters,
and cooling coils are provided for summer
conditioning.
The front end of the building is also
warmed by an oil heater. Although, in
the interest of economy, no cooling coUs
were provided for this system, they can
be added in future if desired.
This theatre has a very simple system
of duct work with air supplied to the
auditorium through one large directional
grille located near the ceiling above the
proscenium. This arrangement provides
uniform distribution of both warm and
cool air throughout the auditorium. The
return air is taken through two grilles
in the face of the stage. Two vent ducts
are provided at the rear of the auditorium
with grUles at the floor connected to ventilators
in the roof of the building.
The fresh air intake is of sufficient capacity
to supply the fuU output of the
blower, but the arrangement permits the
use of any percentage of fresh air desired.
The heating ventilating and air conditioning
system at the Lodi was installed
by the American Foundry & Furnace Co.'s
Milwaukee branch. The theatre was designed
by architect Myles Belongia of
Milwaukee.
A Veteran Makes a Sale
In Dallas for the Southwest Aii- Conditioning
Exposition late in January, Edward
Beck, Typhoon Air Conditioning engineer
found four old friends in the form of four
huge Typhoon ventilating fans he had installed
in the former Queen Theatre 40
years ago.
In 1915, when the fans were installed, the
Queen Theatre was brand new and something
of a sensation in that it was built
expressly for showing motion pictures. Its
up-to-the-minute completeness included
what cooling could be afforded by the fans
from Typhoon, then a six-year-old company.
On checking up. Beck located Elton
Houck, local head of the Joy theatre chain
which now operates the former Queen as
the Leo. An invitation to attend the Exposition
brought Houck in touch with the
newest in Typhoon equipment and before
the meeting was over he had asked engineers
to check the circuit's Strand Theatre.
The result was an order for a new 10-
ton Typhoon unit.
Said Houck, "Those fans at the Leo were
in perfect working order and were used up
until two years ago when we air conditioned
the Leo. I'll bet they'd start turning
right now if I threw the switch. That is
certainly a good recommendation for any
product."
