DETROIT—Theatre patrons in Detroit
were commended for "native good sense" for
failure to support "Stromboli" with heavy
patronage by the Michigan Catholic.
The picture, playing at the Palms-State
Theatre, lasted only a week, playing to belownormal
business.
Pointing out that "spectacular protests
more often have the effect of sending prurient-minded
persons to the theatre than of
keeping decent people away" the editor congratulated
Detroiters that "no large scale
demonstration was raised." Only incident
was on opening night when about a dozen
pickets appeared for some 10 minutes and
then disappeared without being identified.
CLEVELAND—"Stromboli" opened at the
Palace to 25 per cent better than average
business but attendance fell off chiefly because
of bad weather, with the heaviest snowstorm
of the winter and warnings of dangerous
driving by the Auto club. All three
local critics panned the pictiu-e. It was not
held over.

AKRON—The city council voted 8 to 5
against banning "Stromboli." arguing that a
ban would give additional publicity to the
film, which was booked at the Palace here.
Also, the majority said, the council should
not attempt to legislate private morals.
WILKINSBURG, PA.—The borough council
has prohibited the exhibition of "Stromboli"
under penalty of SlOO fine for each individual
showing of the picture, or 30 days
imprisonment. The Warner circuit operates
the borough's three theatres.
