J. HERE IS MORE TO Operating successful
theatres than showing first-rate
films.
Managers of many new theatres are
quick to point out that an efficient, sanitary
and thoroughly modern set of restrooms
has a definite effect on patron goodwill.
They also recommend up-to-date
restrooms for theatre employes.
In the past little if any serious attention
was given to patron lounges and toilet
rooms. They were often small and inadequate
for the theatre's size, located wherever
space was available and rarely for
convenience. Above all, the appearance
and sanitary conditions were seldom in
keeping with the rest of the house.
The new viewpoint toward lounges and
toilet rooms is clearly illustrated by the
Carnegie Theatre, the first completely new
theatre to be built in Chicago in nine years.
Erected in the heart of the famed Gold
Coast, the Carnegie received the benefit
of plumbing foresight not only in two
patron restrooms but in three smaller toilet
rooms for employes.
As can be seen in the pictures, the Carnegie
restrooms combine the ultimate in
utility with the last word in glamor. Color
—bright and cheerful—appears in both
restrooms. with emphasis, of course, on
the women's lounge.
Highlighting both restrooms are the
latest types of necessary plumbing fixtures
—lavatories, water closets, and urinals. All
are wall-hung except the water closets for
easy, quick floor-cleaning and to reduce
the amount of visible plumbing. Modernization
of an existing theatre can be
carried on with this in mind with amazing
improvement in appearance.
The two urinals in the Carnegie men's
room flush automatically every 90 seconds.
This will save an impressive total of water
in a year and also guarantees that they
are regularly drained.
Two wall-hung lavatories in this toilet
room sparkle with their smooth white surfaces
and chromium-plated brass fittings.
A flat back ledge, similar to that on lavatories
in the home, provides a handy resting
place for glasses, combs, etc., and other
personal belongings while the lavatory user
is washing his hands.
The fittings consist of two valve handles
for the hot and cold water, plus a single
mixing faucet, and a drain knob—all closely
grouped for quick use. The faucet is
