'Outlaw' Runs in Atlanta
Following Ad Dispute
ATLANTA—Following settlement of a dispute
over advertising for "The Outlaw" between
RKO and Georgia Theatres officials,
a canceled booking for the Jane Russell film
was reinstated and the picture opened at the
Fox Theatre here Thursday (2) for a sevenday
run.
A catchline reading "FINALLY, at last,
after a 3-year delay, you can see ..." started
the dispute. Georgia Theatres officials refused
to run advertising containing the line
because they said it implied that the Fox
playdate was to be the first Atlanta showing.
Actually, they said, the film was shown at
the Grand here when it fu-st was released,
and thereafter was shown at 21 suburban
houses in this area.
Charles Boasberg, RKO division manager,
and the Howard Hughes organization refused
to deliver the print for the scheduled March
2-8 playdate unless advertising was run exactly
as issued by the producers. The position
of the Fox management was that the
advertising is misleading to the public.
Georgia Theatres' President William K.
Jenkins approved the decision of his Atlanta
operating personnel not to run the advertising.
When RKO refused to make any change in
the advertising. Georgia Theatres executives
canceled the booking. After considerable discussion,
Hughes finally agreed to deletion of
the "Finally, at last" line from all outdoor
advertising signs displayed in the Atlanta
area, and the seven-day booking was reinstated.
