New Advisory Board
Tn Aid Ohio Censors
COLUMBUS—Governor Lausche has appointed
a three-member advisory board to act
with Clyde Hissong, education director, and
the state censor board in regard to controversial
films. They are Mrs. Mildred Bickel,
president of the Ohio Congress of PTA; Lee
H. B. Malone, director of the Columbus Gallery
of Fine Arts, and Fred C. Slager. principal
of Central High school, all of Columbus.
Appointment of a board to act in an advisory
capacity with the state censor board is
the outcome of a recent ruling by Attorney
General Herbert S. Duffy in regard to recalling
for further censorship a picture which
has been passed.
Specifically, Chief Censor Hissong had
asked Duffy for a ruling as to whether he
could legally recall "Stromboli" because of
the publicity of the star and director. The
attorney general ruled that nothing had been
changed in its picture since its approval by
the censor board and hence there was no
legal basis for recalling it.
The duty of the new three-member board
is to reconsider pictures which have been
passed by the censor board and about which
a question of suitability is raised.
Theatres of Ohio, reports that four more Ohio
congressmen have indicated their support of
are Frederick C. Smith, eighth district;
Thomas H. Burke, ninth district: Walter
Huber. 14th district, and Michael A, Feighan.
20th district. Wood said three congressmen
have not replied to his wire. They are James
G. Polk, sixth, district; Alvin F. Weichel,
13th district, and Michael J. Kirwin. 19th
district.
Gayety, Columbus' only burlesque house,
has reopened after a week's closing with a
policy of pictures only. Jay McGee is manager
. . . Mrs. Ethel Miles. Miles neighborhood
circuit, says the Miles theatres will not
show "StromboU" at this time. "We neither
condemn nor commend the circumstances
which have brought 'StromboU' to public attention.
We simply do not wish to use sensationalism
as a means of exploiting our programs.
We feel the family audiences which
make up a majority patronage of neighborhood
theatres will prefer us to market our
pictures on their own merits."
