The participants said th<strong>at</strong> the boys were taught much more. They were required to<br />
learn. Mr. Celestino was stricter than his wife, Mrs. Celsa- the girls’ teacher. Many of<br />
the boys th<strong>at</strong> over achieved in school went to the seminary to pursue more advanced<br />
classes and to l<strong>at</strong>er on become priests or brothers.<br />
Wh<strong>at</strong> was not lacking was religious form<strong>at</strong>ion. During the good times, they went<br />
every day to c<strong>at</strong>echesis. The priests gave prizes like religious stamps or lollipops, but<br />
when they did not pay <strong>at</strong>tention he also he<strong>at</strong>ed their cheeks with a slap or gave them the<br />
famous capones (a hit with the knuckles of the fingers on the head). Every day they<br />
would go to church to visit El Sagrario and sing:<br />
Let’s go boys to the Sagrario<br />
Where Jesus lay crying<br />
But when he sees all these boys<br />
He will become very happy.<br />
Don’t cry, Jesus, don’t cry<br />
Because you are going to make us cry<br />
And the boys from this town,<br />
We want to console you.<br />
During the month of May they would go get flowers from the field and take them<br />
to the Virgin Mary. They were very happy to do this. They did not care about getting<br />
wet as long as they could take the prettiest flowers. These were the things th<strong>at</strong> gave them<br />
excitement. They knew th<strong>at</strong> every year was the same and it was awaited with a lot of<br />
excitement.<br />
With no less excitement they remember the games they played during recess or<br />
after school. I shall dedic<strong>at</strong>e another chapter to the games th<strong>at</strong> were played due to the<br />
