Cannon Strafing
The cannon is located in the starboard wing root extension and is normally used in
conjunction with the laser rangefinder. The cannon is extremely accurate, having a
fire rate of 1,500 rounds per minute, with 150 rounds ammunition. The barrel of
the GSh-301 has a 2,000-round life, equivalent to 80 seconds of fire at usual
1500 rpm. The cannon is fixed in the forward direction.
During an attack on ground targets, the cannon and unguided rockets are
employed in effectively the same way. The main differences are the maximum
effective range and the minimum range (dictated by firing safety), which for
GSh-301 are 1800 and 700 meters, respectively.
