SHADY & PENN<br />

INTERSECTION<br />

RECONFIGURATION<br />

Existing Penn-Shady intersection<br />

Combined with a road diet for Penn Avenue<br />

<strong>east</strong> <strong>of</strong> Shady Avenue, <strong>the</strong> Penn-Shady<br />

intersection can <strong>potential</strong>ly be redesigned<br />

to make it more pedestrian and bicycle<br />

friendly. Replacing <strong>the</strong> high-speed right<br />

turn ramp from Penn Ave to Shady Ave<br />

will require vehicles to make <strong>the</strong> turning<br />

movement in a slow and controlled fashion.<br />

Textured crosswalks along all approaches<br />

will signal to drivers that pedestrians are to<br />

be expected. Also, bicycle lanes and bike<br />

priority treatments (including pavement<br />

markings and signage) should be used<br />

wherever possible to provide comfortable<br />

access through <strong>the</strong> intersection and to <strong>the</strong><br />

busway <strong>station</strong>.<br />

A review <strong>of</strong> signal plans along <strong>the</strong> Penn<br />

Avenue corridor revealed that <strong>the</strong> Penn-<br />

Shady intersection is not currently<br />

coordinated with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r traffic signals to<br />

<strong>the</strong> west. The redesign <strong>of</strong> this intersection<br />

should include new signal equipment and<br />

communication systems so that traffic<br />

along <strong>the</strong> corridor can be more efficiently<br />

managed. The following illustrations<br />

show some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> concepts that should<br />

be explored in greater detail for <strong>the</strong> Penn-<br />

Shady intersection.<br />
