A student may take advanced course work or complete a student designed project in History after having completed<br />

introductory courses. The topics, learning objectives, educational material(s), number of units to be awarded, and<br />

method of evaluation are determined in a written agreement between the instructor and the student before the<br />

student engages in the learning experience. A “Learning Contract for Directed Studies” must be completed by the<br />

student, approved by the instructor, and Chief Instructional Officer, and placed on file with the Office of Instruction.<br />

An introduction to Western civilization from 3200 BC to 1300 AD. Through lecture, research and examples of the fine<br />

arts of the times, students will learn of Western civilization’s changing culture from the Egyptian Age to the Middle Ages.<br />

An introduction to Western civilization from 1400 CE to the present. Through lecture, research and examples of<br />

the fine arts of the times, students will learn of Western civilization’s changing culture from the Renaissance to the<br />

present, thus enabling the student to better understand his/her own present-day culture.<br />

Analytical and critical survey of a genre of films, including fields of production, direction and acting. Cross-listed as<br />

hUMN 172 DEMOCRACY IN PRACTICE: 3 UNITS<br />

HOURS: 27 LEC; 54 LAB; 45 FIELD LANDMARKS OF CIVIL RIGHTS CSU<br />

This course will explore “democracy in practice” through lecture and discussion, attendance and participation in a<br />

community political event, and a fully supervised week visiting prominent places in the history of the Civil Rights<br />

Movement in the southern states of the U.S. It will examine how individuals and groups influence major institutional<br />

political changes in local, state and national policy. Each student will be required to pay the cost of airfare, hotels,<br />

meals, and incidental costs of a seven- to ten-day excursion that includes Virginia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Crosslisted<br />

as POL 172 and HIST 172.<br />
