PHIL 100 INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY 3 UNITS<br />

An introduction to philosophy with emphasis on identifying and evaluating central themes and issues within the<br />
history of philosophy. In this course, students are encouraged to critically evaluate their own philosophical concepts<br />
as they explore early to modern philosophy. Topics include: Ethics, Metaphysics, Epistemology, philosophy of religion,<br />
and contemporary philosophy.<br />
PHIL 101 LOGIC 3 UNITS<br />
HOURS: 3 lec<br />

Students are introduced to principles of formal reasoning including categorical logic, tests for logical validity,<br />
propositional logic, and logical proofs. Topics include deductive and inductive reasoning, Venn diagrams, syllogisms,<br />
the square of opposition, modern symbolic logic, and truth tables. The development of logical systems is discussed in<br />
the context of the history of philosophy and the role of logic in scientific hypothesis formation and testing. Informal<br />
logic, informal fallacies, and the relationship between inductive logic and statistical thinking are also explored.<br />
PHIL 102 ETHICS AND SOCIAL VALUES 3 UNITS<br />

Introduction to philosophical analysis of ethics/morality and the formal principles of theorizing and reasoning values<br />
in personal and social contexts. Course will present various approaches within the field of philosophy and their<br />
applications to contemporary moral issues (such as abortion, euthanasia, censorship, and capital punishment).<br />
PHIL 103 PHILOSOPHY OF 3 UNITS<br />

Philosophic analysis and study of religious practices, beliefs, and rituals in the human community. Traditions will be<br />
examined through historical, textual, and cultural approaches. Topics include: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism,<br />
Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Sikhism,and Animism.<br />
PHIL 150 INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTIANITY 3 UNITS<br />

A survey of major philosophical tenets of Christianity. Among the issues examined will be the philosophy of Judaism,<br />
the development of early Christianity, the Protestant Reformation, and modern trends in Christianity.<br />
PHIL 291 DIRECTED STUDY 1-5 UNITS<br />

A student may take advanced course work or complete a student designed project in Philosophy after having<br />
completed introductory courses. The topics, learning objectives, educational material(s), number of units to be<br />
awarded, and method of evaluation are determined in a written agreement between the instructor and the student<br />
before the student engages in the learning experience. A “Learning Contract for Directed Studies” must be completed<br />
by the student, approved by the instructor, and Chief Instructional Officer, and placed on file with the Office of<br />
Instruction.<br />

A comprehensive coverage of the physical sciences, including physics, chemistry, geology, and astronomy. Emphasis<br />
is placed on the scientific method and how it has led us to our current understanding of the universe around us and<br />
the processes that shape it.<br />
