A student may take advanced course work or complete a student designed project in Physics after having completed<br />
introductory courses. The topics, learning objectives, educational material(s), number of units to be awarded, and<br />
method of evaluation are determined in a written agreement between the instructor and the student before the<br />
student engages in the learning experience. A “Learning Contract for Directed Studies” must be completed by the<br />
student, approved by the instructor, and Chief Instructional Officer, and placed on file with the Office of Instruction.<br />

POL 101 AMERICAN GOVERNMENT 3 UNITS<br />

This course is an introduction to national and California state government. Topics examined include the constitutional<br />
foundations, the institutions and structures of government, and the politics in government including the role of<br />
interest groups, political parties, the function of campaigns and elections, and policymaking. Throughout the course,<br />
students will consider important issues facing democracy in the United States.<br />
POL 140 MULTIETHNIC AMERCIA 3 UNITS<br />

This course is a study of power and politics in the context of a multi-ethnic America. The course will consider the<br />
historical, theoretical, and comparative perspectives from the experiences of different ethnic groups in the U.S while<br />
examining topics such as immigration, education, employment, health care, and housing among others.<br />

Overview of the processes and structures of globalization contributing to the interconnectedness of the world and of<br />
the theoretical perspectives on debates accompanying globalization. Topics include colonialism, political economy,<br />
economic development, human rights, the migration of people and ideas, environmental issues, tourism, media, and<br />
resistance to globalization. Cross-listed with SOC 160.<br />
POL 170 WASHINGTON D.C. WEEK: 3 UNITS<br />
HOURS: 27 lec; 54 LAB; 45 FIELD “DEMOCRACY IN PRACTICE” CSU<br />
This course will explore “democracy in practice” through lecture and study, attendance and participation in a local<br />
government or community political event, and a fully supervised and coordinated week in Washington, D.C. It will<br />
explore the behavior of key actors in national government institutions. It also will examine how individuals and<br />
groups can affect and are affected by the institutions and people of national and local government. The course would<br />
be especially helpful to any who aspire to a career in education. Each student shall be required to pay for the cost of<br />
airfare, hotel, meals and incidentals for the trip to Washington, in addition to regular college fees.<br />
POL 172 DEMOCRACY IN PRACTICE: 3 UNITS<br />
HOURS: 27 LEC; 54 LAB; 45 FIELD LANDMARKS OF CIVIL RIGHTS CSU<br />
This course will explore “democracy in practice” through lecture and discussion, attendance and participation in a<br />
community political event, and a fully supervised week visiting prominent places in the history of the Civil Rights<br />
Movement in the southern states of the U.S. It will examine how individuals and groups influence major institutional<br />
political changes in local, state and national policy. Each student will be required to pay the cost of airfare, hotels,<br />
meals, and incidental costs of a seven- to ten-day excursion that includes Virginia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Crosslisted<br />
as POL 172 and HIST 172.<br />
