Admission Requirements and Procedures<br />

MATRICULATION<br />

Matriculation is a statewide California Community <strong>College</strong> program that assists students in successfully completing<br />

their education and career goals. The matriculation process includes orientation, assessment testing, counseling/<br />

advising, and follow-up. Though the matriculation process is not mandatory, it is strongly recommended that<br />

students participate to assure a successful college experience.<br />

Matriculating students are defined as those who:<br />

• Are enrolling for six units or more; and/or<br />

• Are pursuing a degree or certificate; and/or<br />

• Plan to take English or Math courses.<br />

Student Orientation<br />

<strong>Feather</strong> <strong>River</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers two basic types of new student orientation: on-campus and online. Both types are<br />

designed to familiarize students with the FRC campus, faculty and staff, college programs and policies, and student<br />

rights and responsibilities. In addition, both assist students in completing the initial steps in matriculation, provide<br />

information about how to be successful in college, and explain the support services available both on and off campus.<br />

For an extended orientation, students can enroll in <strong>College</strong> 100, Becoming a Successful Student. All students are<br />

encouraged to take part in an orientation.<br />

Assessment Testing<br />

Assessment tests indicate an entering student’s skill level in reading, writing and math and assist the student and<br />

advisors or counselor in determining appropriate class placement. The tests take about two hours to complete and<br />

results are available almost immediately. Assessment testing is to be completed prior to pre-registration counseling/<br />

advising appointments. Results do not affect eligibility for admission. To prepare for the test, students can take an<br />

assessment pretest at the following link: www.testprepreview.com/accuplacer_practice.htm<br />

Assessment tests can be taken at the FRC Assessment Center or at a local community college. Appointments for onsite<br />

testing must be made through the FRC Assessment Center at least one day in advance.<br />

Special testing accommodations are available for students with disabilities and limited English skills by advance appointment.<br />

Academic Advising<br />

Academic advising is available to all students whether they have defined goals in a specific major or vocational subject<br />

area, or are undecided and need help selecting a program or major. Advisors will use the <strong>College</strong> <strong>Catalog</strong> to<br />

provide students with discipline specific information that includes the sequence of courses necessary for graduation<br />

or transfer and a clear outlook of career and employment opportunities in the student’s major or interest area. In addition,<br />

advisors will assist students in understanding how credits of other colleges count toward graduation. Advisors<br />

are available on a drop-in or appointment basis.<br />

An academic/athletic advisor specializes in advising athletes concerning NCAA I, NCAA II and NAIA transfer eligibility<br />

requirements and works to assure that student athletes remain eligible. All student athletes are required to have<br />

a completed Student Education Plan (SEP) on file their first semester. The Plan should be updated every semester.<br />

Students should talk to faculty in their major about course sequencing, transfer options and employment opportunities<br />

in their field of study.<br />

Follow-Up<br />

Advisors and counselors monitor student progress on an ongoing basis. Students are encouraged to meet with their<br />

advisor or counselor at least once a semester to update their Student Education Plan (SEP) and identify services that<br />

might assist them in completing their educational goals. Through an Early Alert process, faculty members identify<br />

students who are facing challenges in their courses. The advisors and counselors then conduct intervention interviews<br />

with these students to ensure they are aware of available support services and assistance programs, and make<br />

referrals as appropriate.<br />
