Consequently, faces etc. cannot be recognised anymore and reading is no longer posssible. A distinction is made between a dry and a wet form. Whereas the former is not amenable to treatment (yet), the wet form has recently become treatable with medication. The wet form (Fig. 5) with formation of new blood vessels (neovascularisattion) and subsequent fluid leakaage can currently be treated by three different, albeit similar, therapies (referred to as VEGF inhibitors). There are extensive studies on Ranibizumab and Pegaptanib, which confirm their efficacy. Positive experieences have now also been reported for the use of Bevacizzumab. In this procedure, the medicattion is injected into the vitreous body where it takes effect. The operation is performed as an outpatient surgery using eyedrop anaesthesia and aseptic technique. A recovery can be achieved even in macular oedemas (colllections of fluids at the area responsible for high acuity vision) resulting from diabetes, uveitis or vein thrombosis (Fig. 6a - c, 7a - c). However, the VEFG inhibitors need to be injected repeatedly at an interval of about four weeks to achieve mediumterm success. Due to the novelty of this type of treatmment, long-term results do not exist yet. Nevertheless, there is now hope for many patients who could previously not be helped at all.
