They document 6,000 years of cultural and historical development from Europe to the Far East. In Berlin, there are around 175 museums in all. Berlin’s cultural ambassador to the world is the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle as principal conductor and artistic director. The range of musical entertainmment includes cabaret performaances in various folklore pubs and a notable rock and jazz scene with many clubs and venues for major events. Berllin’s “Waldbühne” is the finest open-air theatre in Europe. During the summer months, it attracts audiences of up to 22,000 each evening to various events ranging from classical and rock music to film presenttations. Discover Berlin from Above If you’re looking for an unussual way to see the city from above, try the Berlin Hi-Flyer at Checkpoint Charlie. In this helium-filled balloon that is tethered to the ground, you can experience a panorama of Berlin from 150 meters up in the air. If you really want to take off for a bird’s eye view, Air Service Berlin offers other attractions: for example, take an excursion with a hydroplane that is the only one of its kind in Germany – it takes off and lands directly on the Spree Riveer. Around 350 primarily youthful designers and creators have currently settled in the German capital. In January 2006, UNESCO selected Berlin as a “City of Design”. Thus far, it is the only metropolis in Europe to be awarded this distinction. It has consequently been included in the global “Creative Cities Netwwork” of that UN organization. Shopping Centers With the Kurfürstendamm, Friedrichstrasse, and Potsdameer Platz, Berlin boasts three different shopping centers. The Kurfürstendamm, a magnificent boulevard which extends for a length of 3.5 km has sometthing for everyone: from the famous department store Kaufhhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) through the Europa Center to the many international fashion boutiques, restaurants, and cafés. In addition to Kurfürstenddamm, Friedrichstrasse in the former East Berlin is an inviting place for a stroll, too. On the Potsdamer Platz, there are now around 130 shops just on the DaimlerChrysler site alone. The Green Metropolis With its vast array of public parks, extensive woodlands, and scores of lakes and rivers, this capital city is no doubt the greenest metropolis in all of Germany.
