Since 2007, the former Austrian vice champion in
dressage has been the General Director of the Spanish

Welche Highlights erwarten die Besucherinnen
und Besucher der großen Gala zum runden
Jubiläum der Spanischen Hofreitschule am
Heldenplatz?
Wir werden eine Fohlen- und Stutenherde aus unserem
Gestüt Piber nach Wien bringen, was sicher die Herzen
aller großen und auch kleinen Pferdefreunde berühren
wird. Als Ehrengäste haben wir dann die Urahnen
unserer Lipizzaner, die Andalusier, mit ihren Reitern
nach Wien eingeladen. Gemeinsam mit der Real
Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre werden unsere
Reiter mit ihren Lipizzanern „Gustostückerl“ aus der
klassischen Reitkunst zeigen: die Schulsprünge Levade,
Kapriole und Courbette – und das sowohl an der Hand
als auch unter dem Reiter. Natürlich wird es auch ein
beeindruckendes Solo und die Vorführung am „Langen
Zügel“ geben, bevor als krönender Abschluss die nur
alle Jahrzehnte zu sehende 12er-Quadrille präsentiert
wird.
Ein weiterer Höhepunkt des Festtages wird die
sechste Auflage der von Ihnen ins Leben
gerufenen „Fête Impériale“. Worauf dürfen sich
die Gäste des beliebten Sommerballs freuen?
Nach der Vorführung am Heldenplatz bitten wir die
Gäste, die auch den Ball besuchen wollen, direkt zur
Michaelerkuppel, wo unser traditioneller VIP Cocktail
stattfindet, bevor wir dann von den Hoch- und
Deutschmeistern zur Balleröffnung in der Winter -
reitschule abgeholt werden. Thematisch steht der Ball
heuer im Zeichen Wiens – Details sind aber noch ein
Geheimnis und werden erst bekannt gegeben!
Unter Ihrer Ägide hat sich die Hofreitschule
erstmals auch Frauen geöffnet. Wann wird denn
die erste weibliche Oberbereiterin in der Hofburg
zu sehen sein?
Als im Jahr 2008 erstmals zwei weibliche Bewerberinnen
in den Elevenstatus der Spanischen Hofreitschule
aufgenommen wurden, gab es viele kritische Stimmen,
die das als Bruch einer jahrhundertealten Tradition
ansahen. Heute haben wir fünf junge Damen teils als
Pferdewirtlehrlinge, Elevinnen und Hannah Zeitlhofer
auch als Bereiteranwärterin bei uns. Da die Ausbildung
zum Bereiter etwa 8 bis 10 Jahre dauert, kann damit
gerechnet werden, dass in nächster Zeit auch eine
weibliche Bereiterin in den Vorführungen zu sehen
sein wird. Die Ernennung zum Oberbereiter ist nur bei
ganz außergewöhnlichen Leistungen vorgesehen, die
nicht nur langjährige Berufserfahrung einschließen,
sondern auch Sprachkenntnisse, geschichtliches
Wissen und die Fähigkeit, die Hofreitschule nach außen
zu repräsen tieren.
What highlights await visitors to the Anniversary
Gala of the Spanish Riding School on Heldenplatz

We will bring a foal and mare herd from our stud farm
Piber to Vienna, which will surely touch the hearts of
all horse lovers big and small. As guests of honour, we
have invited the ancestors of our Lipizzaners, the Andalusians
with their riders, to Vienna. Together with Real
Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, our riders will
show “delicacies” from classical horsemanship with
their Lipizzaner horses, the school jumps levade,
capriole and courbette – both at halter and under the
saddle. Of course, there will also be an impressive solo,
and the presentation on the “long reins” before the
crowning finale of the 12 quadrille which is normally
presented only once per decade.
Another highlight of the festival is the sixth edition
of the “Fête Imperial” which had been launched by
you. What may the guests of the popular summer
ball look forward to?
After the performance at Heldenplatz, we will
accompany guests who want to visit the ball straight to
the Michaelerkuppel, where our traditional VIP cocktail
event takes place. Afterwards we will be collected by
the High and German Masters of the Winter Riding
School for the opening of the ball. Thematically, the
ball this year is dedicated to Vienna! Details are still a
secret and will be announced soon!
With your patronage, the riding school has finallly
opened up to women. When will the first female
chief rider be seen in the Hofburg?
When two female applicants entered the Eleves status
of the Spanish Riding School in 2008 for the first time,
there were many critical voices who saw it as a
breaking of a centuries-old tradition. Today, we have
five young ladies, some as stablehand apprentices,
Eleves and Hannah Zeitlhofer as aspirant rider.
Although the training of a rider takes about 8-10 years,
we expect that a female rider will soon be seen in the
performances. The appointment of chief rider is
intended only for exceptional achievements, not only
for professional experience, but also language skills,
knowledge of history and the ability to represent the
Riding School.

years of intensive training they may, for the first
time, perform at the matinee of the Spanish Riding
School in the Winter Riding Hall, designed by the
well-known baroque architect Fischer von Erlach.
Elisabeth Gürtler became the first woman to be
Director General when she took up the post eight
years ago. Since then, a breath of fresh air has blown
through the Spanish Riding School. The Director of
the Hotel Sacher and former Vice Champion in dressage,
not only made the time-honoured institution
available to women for the first time, she also took
the opportunity to initiate ball-goers to convene
once again. For the past five years, the Spanish Riding
School has been turned into Vienna’s most
beautiful summer ballroom for a day. Elisabeth
Gürtler does not only bring the Royal Andalusian
Riding School to Vienna for the 450-year anniversary,
but the celebration is crowned by the sixth edition
of the Fête Impériale on June 26. On this occasion,
it’s the people, and not the horses, that dance in the
beautiful baroque Winter Riding Hall.
