of English <strong>and</strong> the structure of Eng lish grammar.<br />

ESL 075 Building an <strong>Academic</strong> Vocabulary<br />

An effective vocabulary is the key to success<br />
in work <strong>and</strong> in life. For many stu dents learning<br />
English, a limited vocabulary is the biggest<br />
obstacle to their success. This course is<br />
designed to help students quickly learn new<br />
English words for use in academic courses. Priority<br />
will be given to the 3,000 most commonly<br />
used words in written <strong>and</strong> spoken English,<br />
words from the <strong>Academic</strong> Word List, common<br />
idiomatic expressions, terms used frequently on<br />
tests <strong>and</strong> quizzes <strong>and</strong> other assignments, <strong>and</strong><br />
abbreviations <strong>and</strong> acronyms common ly found in<br />
American English. The goal is to increase students’<br />
working vocabulary (in correct forms <strong>and</strong><br />
in various contexts) to enhance their success in<br />
college. Placement in ESL courses is open only<br />
to speakers of other languages <strong>and</strong> is based on<br />
students’ score on CMMC’s placement test.<br />
ESL 101 <strong>Academic</strong> Writing <strong>and</strong> Grammar<br />

A continuation of 070 with a focus on devel oping<br />
advanced academic writing skills, in preparation<br />
for ENG 101. This course cov ers narration, argument<br />
<strong>and</strong> research, with companion grammar<br />
<strong>and</strong> style compo nents. Students will be expected<br />
to write according to the conventions of written<br />
American English. This course is taught in<br />
a computer lab <strong>and</strong> requires regular use of the<br />
internet <strong>and</strong> computer applications. Placement<br />
in ESL courses is open only to speakers of other<br />
languages <strong>and</strong> is based on students’ score on<br />

ESL 102 Literature<br />

genres of American literature, with a focus on<br />

listening comprehension. Placement in ESL<br />

ESL 103 American Studies<br />

This course helps students develop an underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />
<strong>and</strong> appreciation of the current social<br />
<strong>and</strong> economic structure of the US, applying<br />
those constructs to litera ture, current events <strong>and</strong><br />
personal explo ration. The student will examine<br />
historical documents, literature, music, <strong>and</strong> art<br />
to establish a cultural context for underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />
college texts. Placement in ESL courses is<br />
open only to speakers of other languages <strong>and</strong><br />
is based on students’ score on CMMC’s placement<br />

ESL 104 <strong>Academic</strong> Writing II<br />

This course is a continuation of ESL 101, with<br />
an emphasis on developing proficien cy in advanced<br />
grammar structures <strong>and</strong> usage, including<br />
prepositions, phrasal verbs, adverbs <strong>and</strong> adjectives,<br />
compara tives <strong>and</strong> superlatives, perfect<br />
tenses, modals, gerunds <strong>and</strong> infinitives. This<br />
course is taught in a computer lab <strong>and</strong> requires<br />
regular use of the internet <strong>and</strong> computer applications.<br />

This course consists of two major sections of<br />
instruction <strong>and</strong> lab experience. The fi rst section<br />
introduces the student to the automotive<br />
industry, dealership operations, shop safety;<br />
Ford service publications, h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> power tool<br />
usage, <strong>and</strong> basic vehicle overview. The second<br />
section teaches basic electrical theory, use of<br />
electrical test equipment, circuit <strong>and</strong> component<br />
testing, <strong>and</strong> battery testing <strong>and</strong> service. In addition,<br />
fundamentals, servicing <strong>and</strong> testing of<br />
starting systems, charging systems, <strong>and</strong> ignition<br />
system will also be covered.<br />
FOA 130 Engine Repair/Climate Control<br />

10 Hrs/Wk (1 Hr. Lecture 9 Hrs. Shop) *15 wks<br />
This course consists of two major sections of<br />
instruction <strong>and</strong> lab experience. The fi rst section<br />
teaches the principles of four-stroke engine<br />
operation, identifi cation of engine systems <strong>and</strong><br />
components, cylinder head <strong>and</strong> valve train diagnosis<br />
<strong>and</strong> service, engine noise diagnosis,<br />
<strong>and</strong> turbocharger/ supercharger principles. In<br />
addition, disas sembly <strong>and</strong> reassembly of complete<br />
gas engines, inspection, measurement<br />
<strong>and</strong> repair of all components; engine repair <strong>and</strong><br />
overhaul procedures will also be covered. The<br />
second section teaches the operation of heating/air<br />
conditioning systems; princi ples of refrigeration;<br />
inspection, testing <strong>and</strong> servicing climate<br />
control system compo nents; <strong>and</strong> automatic<br />
temperature control. Prerequisites: FOA 191 or<br />
instructor permission.<br />
FOA 131 Field Experience<br />

In FOA 131 the student works in the service<br />
department of a local Ford or Lincoln/ Mer cury<br />
dealership. This h<strong>and</strong>s-on training under the direction<br />
<strong>and</strong> supervision of an experi enced technician,<br />
reinforces the subjects learned in FOA<br />
130. Prerequisite: FOA 130.<br />
