Automotive Technology<br />
Parts <strong>and</strong> Service Management (PSM)<br />
programs<br />
of study<br />
Program Description<br />
This program is designed to prepare individuals for successful careers<br />
in automotive parts <strong>and</strong> service management. Graduates of the program<br />
will have the basic technical skills in automotive technology, competencies<br />
in business management, <strong>and</strong> a broad general education in verbal <strong>and</strong><br />
written communication, computa tion <strong>and</strong> problem solving. Students in the<br />
program will acquire skills <strong>and</strong> knowledge in general operations, customer<br />
relations <strong>and</strong> sales, vehicle systems, vehicle identification, component location,<br />
cata loging, inventory management, <strong>and</strong> merch<strong>and</strong>ising.<br />
Students have the opportunity to earn a Certificate or an Associate in Applied<br />
Science degree <strong>and</strong> may enroll on a full or part-time basis <strong>and</strong> may<br />
take courses in the day, evening, or both, depend ing upon availability. Students<br />
enrolled for full-time course work usually need two academic years<br />
to complete the associate degree. Part time students may need several<br />
years to complete the program requirements.<br />
Pre-registration Requirements<br />
In addition to meeting the admission requirements of the College, applicants<br />
to this program must have the following:<br />
• The motivation <strong>and</strong> aptitude to succeed in the program.<br />
• A mastery of basic academic skills in reading, writing <strong>and</strong> arithmetic<br />
• Fundamental skills in using a personal computer<br />
Preparatory courses, prior to admission, are available at <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Maine</strong><br />
<strong>Community</strong> College <strong>and</strong> at local Adult Education Centers.<br />
Career Opportunities<br />
Upon graduation, students accept positions as shop foreman, serv ice<br />
advisor, service manager, parts <strong>and</strong> service management (service director)<br />
or in automobile sales. Other opportunities include parts counter<br />
salesperson, parts manager, manufacturer representative, warranty clerk.<br />
Job experience within the parts <strong>and</strong> service field could eventually lead to<br />
after-market parts assistant or store manager <strong>and</strong> automobile dealership<br />
general manager owner.<br />
