Program Description<br />

The Associate in Applied Science Degree in Human Services will prepare<br />

graduates for entry-level positions in areas of substance abuse, mental<br />

health, developmental disabilities, child <strong>and</strong> adoles cent services, <strong>and</strong><br />

gerontology. The development of concentrations in each area may be<br />

explored in the future. Upon completion of the nine courses identifi ed by<br />

a **double asterisk, students are eligible for certification as a MHRT/C<br />

technician (Mental Health Rehabilita tion Technician/<strong>Community</strong>).<br />

Note: All applicants are advised that Human Services students are<br />

required to complete practicums in social serv ice agencies. Therefore,<br />

students may be required to have a record of SBI (State Bureau<br />

of Identification) on file with the practicum site. Practicum sites<br />

retain the right to accept or deny placement of students based on<br />

many conditions, including criminal <strong>and</strong> child protective records.<br />

Therefore, criminal or child protective history could jeopardize an<br />

indi vidual’s ability to successfully meet all the requirements of the<br />

program.<br />

A grade of “C” or better in all Human Services courses, a cumula tive GPA<br />

of 2.0 or better, completion of the first, second, third, <strong>and</strong> fourth semester<br />

courses <strong>and</strong> approval of the Department Chair is required before enrollment<br />

in the Human Services Practicums.<br />

Career Opportunities<br />

Graduates can be employed in the following capacities: activity therapist<br />

associate, addictions counselor, crisis counselor, human development associate,<br />

mental health associate, rehabilitation worker, family worker, activity<br />

director/associate, <strong>and</strong> volunteer coordinator. The facilities that employ<br />

individuals in these capacities, include: community mental health centers,<br />

programs for the elderly, hospitals, social service <strong>and</strong> mental health programs.<br />

Graduates may also be employed in facilities <strong>and</strong> programs for<br />

the developmentally disabled, special programs for alcoholics <strong>and</strong> drug<br />

abusers, youth services, <strong>and</strong> child care <strong>and</strong> Head Start programs.<br />

Program Educational Outcomes<br />

Upon completion of the Associate Degree in Applied Science in Human<br />

Services Program, the graduate is prepared to:<br />

1. Utilize knowledge of the basic counseling skills necessary to establish<br />

collaborative relationship with clients <strong>and</strong> their families.<br />

2. Demonstrate knowledge of formal <strong>and</strong> informal support sys tems<br />

available in the community.<br />

3. Analyze problems <strong>and</strong> use appropriate methods in collabora tion<br />

with other team members in the treatment of individual, family, group<br />

<strong>and</strong> community human service problems.<br />

4. Demonstrate awareness of the challenges faced by clients with regard<br />

to human-rights issues, financial problems, administrative/ legal<br />

hurdles <strong>and</strong> other issues/concerns.<br />

5. Assume ethical responsibility <strong>and</strong> abide by the st<strong>and</strong>ards governing<br />

the field of Human Services.<br />

6. Establish <strong>and</strong> maintain continuing education as a function of growth<br />

<strong>and</strong> maintenance of professional competence.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

In addition to the general admission requirements of the College, applicants<br />

to this program must have had the following: Algebra I<br />

Pre-Registration Requirements<br />

The following are additional requirements needed prior to registration in<br />

the first practicum course. Other programs at <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Maine</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />

College <strong>and</strong> comparable colleges have similar requirements.<br />

1. A physical exam performed by a qualified health care profes sional<br />

2. Proof of the following immunizations or titers:<br />

Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR)<br />

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) - 3 doses<br />

Adult Tetanus<br />

Purified Protein Derivative (PPD for TB)<br />

Varicella titer for Chicken Pox<br />

3. Professional liability insurance is required.<br />

4. All students are advised to purchase their own Health/Accident<br />

Insurance<br />

Once an applicant’s file is complete, the applicant is invited to an informal<br />

meeting with the HUS Program Chairperson for the purpose of reviewing<br />

the program <strong>and</strong> selecting the appropriate course of study. Upon admission<br />

to the program, the student is assigned a HUS faculty advisor.<br />
