This course provides students with instruc tion<br />

<strong>and</strong> practice in identifying, locating, evaluating,<br />

<strong>and</strong> utilizing information. The course focuses<br />

on both the traditional <strong>and</strong> newest methods of<br />

information retrieval, including the Internet. This<br />

course is designed to be especially helpful to<br />

those returning to the academic arena. Prerequisites:<br />

Successful completion ENG 101 <strong>and</strong> BCA<br />

120 or instructor permission.<br />

This preparatory course provides a review of<br />

measurement. Includes an intro duction to algebraic<br />

concepts. Students are expected to gain<br />

mastery in each of these areas <strong>and</strong> demonstrate<br />

their competency on appropriate tests. Prerequisite:<br />

operations including problem solving with simple<br />

equations, polynomials, factor ing, rational expressions,<br />

equations. Prerequisite: MAT 030 or above 40th<br />

per centile on Arithmetic <strong>and</strong> 20th on Algebra Assessment<br />

<strong>and</strong> Placement Tests, or Math SAT 480.<br />

This course covers the fundamentals of algebra<br />

MAT 101 Business Mathematics<br />

This course is designed to develop the computational<br />

<strong>and</strong> vocabulary skills necessary for:<br />

retailing, marketing, accounting, finance <strong>and</strong><br />

business manage ment. Topics studied include:<br />

interest, banking, depreciation systems, payroll,<br />

sta tistics <strong>and</strong> graphics. It includes exp<strong>and</strong>ed application<br />

of algebraic principles through the study<br />

of quadratics <strong>and</strong> linear equa tions to business<br />

problems including stan dard of deviation <strong>and</strong> coefficient<br />

of variation to quality control problems.<br />

symbols, deci sion tables <strong>and</strong> applications;<br />

(4) Mathemat ical systems - clock arithmetic,<br />

modular systems <strong>and</strong> applications <strong>and</strong><br />

finite sys tems; (5) Counting - ways of counting,<br />

sequences, combinations <strong>and</strong> permuta tions; (6)<br />

Probability - finite <strong>and</strong> conditional probability;<br />

(7) Proportion <strong>and</strong> variation. Prerequisites: MAT<br />

050 or HS Algebra I (C or better) <strong>and</strong> minimum<br />

MAT 105 Geometry <strong>and</strong> Trigonometry<br />

This course will begin with a review of the techniques<br />

for solving linear equations in one <strong>and</strong><br />

two unknowns, formulas, quadratic equations,<br />

<strong>and</strong> proportions. The course will cover the U.S.<br />

<strong>and</strong> International units of measurement, geometry<br />

of some common geometric shapes <strong>and</strong><br />

the Pythagorean Theorem. Also included will be<br />

right triangle trigonometry, trigonometry of any<br />

angle <strong>and</strong> vector addition. Prerequisites: MAT<br />

100 or Algebra I <strong>and</strong> II (C or better) <strong>and</strong> minimum<br />

50th percentiles on Arithmetic <strong>and</strong> Algebra<br />

Assessment <strong>and</strong> Placements Tests, or Math<br />

SAT 480.<br />

MAT 122 College Algebra<br />

This course will begin with a review of basic algebraic<br />

operations including solving equations<br />

<strong>and</strong> formulas. Functions <strong>and</strong> the graphing of<br />

functions are included. Trigonometry is limited<br />

to the basic trigono metric functions, the Pythagorean<br />

Theo rem, <strong>and</strong> the solutions to right<br />

triangle problems. The course will include solving<br />

systems of linear equations, factoring <strong>and</strong><br />

rational expressions, solving rational equa tions,<br />

<strong>and</strong> solving of quadratic equations. Exponents<br />

<strong>and</strong> radicals, exponential <strong>and</strong> logarithmic functions<br />

<strong>and</strong> basic statistics will also be covered.<br />

Prerequisites: MAT 100 or minimum 75th percentiles<br />

on Arith metic <strong>and</strong> Algebra Assessment<br />

<strong>and</strong> Place ment Tests, <strong>and</strong> Algebra I <strong>and</strong> II (C or<br />

better), or math SAT 480.<br />

MAT 125 Finite Mathematics<br />

This course will cover several topics relat ed to<br />

problem solving in the areas of busi ness, fi -<br />

nance, sociology, economics, <strong>and</strong> other areas in<br />

which mathematical methods are used. Specifi c<br />

topics include linear functions, systems of equations,<br />

matrix algebra, linear programming, <strong>and</strong><br />

the fundamentals of probability <strong>and</strong> statis tics.<br />

No previous experience in finite math ematics<br />

is necessary; however, a solid foundation in<br />

algebra is essential. Prerequisites: MAT 100 or<br />

the appropriate combination of Algebra II, SAT<br />

scores, <strong>and</strong> Accuplacer placement scores.<br />

MAT 130 Technical Mathematics I<br />

A mathematics course designed to prepare students<br />

for solving problems in the telecommunications<br />

field. Topics included are: number systems,<br />

a review of algebra, linear equations <strong>and</strong> dimensional<br />

analysis, functions <strong>and</strong> graphs, geometry,<br />

trigonom etry, vectors <strong>and</strong> complex numbers. Also<br />

included will be the use of a scientific cal culator<br />

<strong>and</strong> PC based math software. Prerequisites: TTV<br />

matriculant <strong>and</strong> ACT Math 34.<br />
