Medical Coding (MCO)<br />

Program Description<br />

The Certifi cate in Medical Coding prepares the graduates of this program<br />

to perform specialized data entry, classification, <strong>and</strong> record keeping procedures<br />

related to medical diagnostic, treat ment, billing, <strong>and</strong> insurance<br />

documentation. Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for the Certifi<br />

cation Examination. Upon successful completion of the Certification<br />

Examination, the individ ual is eligible to become a Certified Professional<br />

Coder.<br />

Graduates of this program are prepared to work in various health-care<br />

settings, including hospitals, clinics, physician practices, sur gery centers,<br />

long-term care facilities <strong>and</strong> home health agencies. Employment opportunities<br />

are also found in nontraditional health-care areas such as insurance<br />

companies, government agencies, computer software companies, as well<br />

as with consulting fi rms.<br />

Course Requirements<br />

Students must earn a grade of C (not C-) or better in College Writing (ENG<br />

101) in order to meet the Certificate requirements of this program.<br />

Program Educational Outcomes<br />

Upon completion of the Certificate in Medical Coding program, the graduate<br />

is prepared to:<br />

1. Demonstrate the ability to translate information from the med ical<br />

record into st<strong>and</strong>ardized numerical codes accurately <strong>and</strong> in an effi<br />

cient manner.<br />

2. Demonstrate professional conduct <strong>and</strong> ethical behavior.<br />

3. Demonstrate the ability to work with other members of the health<br />

care team.<br />

4. Recognize factors that affect third-party reimbursement.<br />

1 MEA 210 should be taken before MCO 121 <strong>and</strong> MCO 125<br />
