student. The emphasis in this course includes<br />

application of assess ment, planning, intervention<br />

<strong>and</strong> evaluation of outcomes in the provision<br />

of holistic care to patients with common, well<br />

defi ned health problems. Major focus areas<br />

for the student include practice of the role of<br />

the student nurse, development of assessment<br />

skills, nursing care planning, communica tion<br />

with patients <strong>and</strong> families, generation of clinical<br />

judgments related to patient’s assessed needs,<br />

increasing profi ciency with nursing skills, patient<br />

teaching, <strong>and</strong> identifi cation of student’s own<br />

learning needs. Prerequisites: Completion of an<br />

approved Practical Nursing Program <strong>and</strong> current<br />

<strong>Maine</strong> LPN license <strong>and</strong> ENG 101, BIO 115<br />

<strong>and</strong> 116; Co-requisites: PSY 101, BIO 117, 118.<br />

Students are reminded that they are responsible<br />

for prior knowledge. Super vised clinical experiences<br />

take place on medical-surgical nursing<br />

units within a structured health care setting. Pre<br />

<strong>and</strong> Post conferences are designed to assist the<br />

student to further utilize the nursing process <strong>and</strong><br />

provide nursing care.<br />

NUR 121 Nursing Across the Life Span I<br />

The emphasis in this course includes application<br />

of assessment, planning, interven tion<br />

ned health problems as well as patients in the<br />

childbearing/child rearing stage of life. Major focus<br />

areas for the student include practice of the<br />

role of the student nurse, communication with<br />

patients across the life span, growth <strong>and</strong> development<br />

issues, generation of clinical judgments<br />

related to patient’s assessed needs, increasing<br />

profi ciency with nursing skills, patient teaching,<br />

<strong>and</strong> identifi cation of student’s own learning<br />

NUR 134 Clinical Practicum<br />

This course is designed for those students exiting<br />

at the fi rst year (1st level). The course is a<br />

clinical practicum aimed at helping the student<br />

to synthesize freshman academic year theory<br />

<strong>and</strong> clinical nursing practice. Issues pertaining<br />

to the role of the LPN in the work setting are particularly<br />

emphasized. The offering of this course<br />

is contingent upon suffi cient registrations. Prerequisites:<br />

NUR 112; NUR 121; ENG 101, BIO<br />

115, 116, 117, 118; PSY 101.<br />

NUR 210 Pharmacology for Nurses<br />

This course is designed for third semester<br />

nursing students <strong>and</strong> provides an overview of<br />

the principles of pharmacokinetics <strong>and</strong> pharmacodynamics.<br />

The major drug categories are<br />

reviewed with emphasis on therapeutic use,<br />

action <strong>and</strong> adverse reactions. The role of the<br />

nurse <strong>and</strong> the use of the nursing process in assessment,<br />

safe administration <strong>and</strong> evaluation of<br />

patient response is emphasized. Prerequisites:<br />

BIO 117/118 <strong>and</strong> NUR 121.<br />

NUR 212 Nursing Across the Life Span II<br />

9 Credits (5 Lecture 0 Lab 4 Clinical) 17 Hrs/<br />

This course builds on previous coursework<br />

while increasing the student knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />

responsibility in the provision of care for two<br />

or more patients experiencing com plex health<br />

needs. Emphasis is placed on effective communication<br />

with other health care team members,<br />

use of assessment data, prioritization of patient<br />

needs <strong>and</strong> the formulation of clinical judgments<br />

to provide holistic nursing care. Prerequisites:<br />

All Level I (1st year) courses except NUR 134.<br />

LPN advanced placement students must complete<br />

NUR 116; Co-requisites: BIO 211, 212,<br />

PSY 111, NUR 213.<br />

NUR 213 Nursing Across the Life Span III<br />

In this course the student moves into the professional<br />

role of the AD nurse. Provi sion of<br />

holistic care through effective col laboration with<br />

the health care team, the patient <strong>and</strong> families,<br />

collection <strong>and</strong> analysis of relevant data <strong>and</strong> the<br />

formulation of clin ical judgments for patients of<br />

all ages with more complex or multiple health<br />

needs becomes the focus of this course. Students<br />

assume responsibility for a group of patients<br />

practice delegation while working within<br />

the health care team in the provision of care.<br />

Students are encouraged to con tinue their own<br />

education through courses <strong>and</strong>/or review of professional<br />

resources. Prerequisites: NUR 212,<br />

NUR 299 Practicum: Nursing<br />

This course is designed to provide nursing<br />

students with a supervised experience in an<br />

area of clinical specialization which has been<br />

previously studied in didactic classes. Credit<br />

hours range from 1 to 2 credits at a formula<br />

of 45 hours of clinical practice equaling 1<br />

credit hour. Prerequisite: Department Chair<br />

approval.<br />

This course is designed to introduce students in<br />

disciplines other than Occupa tional Health <strong>and</strong><br />

Safety to the fundamen tals of workplace health<br />

<strong>and</strong> safety. Development of workplace health<br />

<strong>and</strong> safety programs, concepts of health <strong>and</strong><br />

safety hazards <strong>and</strong> their control <strong>and</strong> the legal<br />

framework of occupational health <strong>and</strong> safety will<br />

be covered.<br />

OHS 102 Occupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety<br />

This one credit course is designed to intro duce<br />

students in disciplines other than Occupational<br />

Health <strong>and</strong> Safety to the fun damentals of workplace<br />

health <strong>and</strong> safety. Concepts of health <strong>and</strong><br />

safety hazards <strong>and</strong> their control <strong>and</strong> the legal<br />

framework of occupational health <strong>and</strong> safety will<br />

be cov ered. Students will receive a 10 hour card<br />

from the OSHA Training Institute in addition to<br />

academic credit. Note: This course is not applicable<br />

to either the Certificate or the Associate<br />

Degree in Occupational Health <strong>and</strong> Safety.<br />

OHS 115 Basic Principles of Construction<br />

Safety <strong>and</strong> Health<br />

3 Hrs/Wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course will introduce the student to principles<br />

of safety <strong>and</strong> health in the con struction<br />

industry. The course will include identifi cation of<br />

safety <strong>and</strong> health hazards, risk reduction measures,<br />

personal protec tion <strong>and</strong> safety attitudes<br />

<strong>and</strong> training. Stan dards under the Occupational<br />

Safety <strong>and</strong> Health Administration will be the basis<br />

of the course.<br />
