ACC 208 Financial Accounting<br />

This course is a one-semester course for nonaccounting<br />

majors. It is designed to give students<br />

a basic foundation in finan cial accounting<br />

<strong>and</strong> the language of busi ness. Key topics<br />

include the correct classification <strong>and</strong> recording<br />

of accounting transactions, preparation of basic<br />

financial statements, <strong>and</strong> analysis <strong>and</strong> interpretation<br />

of fi nancial data. Students will use computer<br />

software in <strong>and</strong> out of class for some problem<br />

solving.<br />

ACC 210 Principles of Accounting I<br />

This course is a beginning accounting course<br />

that introduces the student to basic financial<br />

statements <strong>and</strong> the double-entry accounting<br />

system. The course includes methods <strong>and</strong><br />

procedures such as merch<strong>and</strong>ising operations,<br />

internal control <strong>and</strong> cash, accounting systems,<br />

accounts <strong>and</strong> notes receivable, accounting for<br />

merch<strong>and</strong>ise inventory, <strong>and</strong> long-term assets<br />

<strong>and</strong> depreciation methods.<br />

ACC 212 Principles of Accounting II<br />

3 Credits (3 Lecture 0 Lab 0 Shop)<br />

3 hrs/wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course is designed to further the underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

of basic accounting principles, methods<br />

<strong>and</strong> procedures gained in Principles of Accounting<br />

I; for example, Partnerships, Current<br />

<strong>and</strong> Long-term liabilities, <strong>and</strong> Capital stock.<br />

Other topics include Cash flows <strong>and</strong> Statement<br />

analysis, along with an introduction to<br />

Managerial accounting concepts. In addition, an<br />

integrated computer-based simulation/project<br />

will be completed at the end of the semester.<br />

Prerequisite: ACC 210 or instructor permission.<br />

ACC 225 Managerial Accounting<br />

3 hrs/wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course is an introduction to internal management<br />

accounting. Emphasis is on the use of<br />

accounting information in controlling the operations<br />

of the enterprise.<br />

Specifi c areas covered include: cost classifications,<br />

accumulating costs through job order <strong>and</strong><br />

process costing techniques, budgeting, responsibility<br />

accounting, <strong>and</strong> transfer pricing. The<br />

fundamental account ing concepts <strong>and</strong> techniques<br />

for planning <strong>and</strong> control are applicable<br />

to all types of functions of organizations; therefore,<br />

this course deals with not-for-profit, retail,<br />

wholesale, selling <strong>and</strong> administrative func tions<br />

as well as the more traditional manu facturing<br />

organizations.<br />

ACC 240 Intermediate Accounting I<br />

3 Credits (3 Lecture 0 Lab 0 Shop)<br />

3 hrs/wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course begins with a comprehensive review<br />

of accounting principles, including the conceptual<br />

framework of accounting as prescribed by the<br />

Financial St<strong>and</strong>ards Board (FASB) <strong>and</strong> Generally<br />

Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).<br />

Other topics include concepts of future <strong>and</strong><br />

present value, theory underlying revenue recognition<br />

practices, internal control procedures<br />

for cash, basic alternative inventory valuation<br />

methods, as well as recording of investment securities.<br />

Prerequisite: ACC 212 with a grade of<br />

C or higher or instructor permission.<br />

ACC 242 Intermediate Accounting II<br />

3 Credits (3 Lecture 0 Lab 0 Shop)<br />

3 hrs/wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course continues the intensive study of<br />

financial accounting including the valua tion of<br />

long-term liabilities <strong>and</strong> accounting for income<br />

taxes, leases, <strong>and</strong> pensions. Other topics are<br />

forming a corporation, recording various types<br />

of dividends, com puting earnings per share, as<br />

well as the preparation of the statement of cash<br />

flows. Application of accounting principles in<br />

recording, reporting, <strong>and</strong> disclosing accounting<br />

changes <strong>and</strong> prior period adjustments are also<br />

included. Prerequi site: ACC 240 with a grade of<br />

C or higher or instructor permission.<br />

ACC 244 Computerized Accounting<br />

3 Credits (3 Lecture 0 Lab 0 Shop)<br />

3 hrs/wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course utilizes QuickBooks integrated<br />

accounting software whereby both service<br />

<strong>and</strong> merch<strong>and</strong>ising businesses are set up<br />

from inception. Depending upon the partic ular<br />

business, the following topics will be covered<br />

throughout the course: general ledger, accounts<br />

payable, accounts receiv able, payroll, inventory,<br />

job costing, import ing <strong>and</strong> exporting of files, <strong>and</strong><br />

other advanced QuickBooks applications. The<br />

necessity of an audit trail will be empha sized.<br />

Prerequisite: ACC 210 or instructor permission.<br />

ACC 246 Tax Accounting (Individual)<br />

3 Credits (3 Lecture 0 Lab 0 Shop)<br />

3 hrs/wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This introductory course examines taxation<br />

for individuals, including Schedule C, which is<br />

filed for sole proprietorship businesses. Filing<br />

requirements, gross income, exclu sions, deductions,<br />

exemptions, tax credits, <strong>and</strong> tax research<br />

are a sampling of the top ics covered. A general<br />

overview of tax con sequences for different<br />

forms of business entities such as corporations,<br />

partnerships, limited liability companies, <strong>and</strong> S<br />

Corpora tions is included. Prerequisite: ACC 210<br />

or instructor permission.<br />

ACC 248 Payroll Accounting<br />

3 Credits (3 Lecture 0 Lab 0 Shop)<br />

3 hrs/wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course is designed to introduce students to<br />

the concepts <strong>and</strong> processes of payroll administration.<br />

Topics include the legal issues surrounding<br />

payroll, salaries/wages <strong>and</strong> overtime, payroll<br />

withholdings <strong>and</strong> payroll taxes, <strong>and</strong> journalizing<br />

<strong>and</strong> analyzing payroll transactions. Students will<br />

also learn extensively about national automated<br />

payroll system providers such as ADP, PayChex<br />

<strong>and</strong> Ceridian.<br />

American Sign Language (ASL)<br />

ASL 101 American Sign Language I<br />

3 hrs/wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course introduces students to Ameri can<br />

Sign Language (ASL), including an examination<br />

of the cultural values <strong>and</strong> rules of behavior<br />

of the Deaf community in the United States. In<br />

developing conversation al competence in ASL,<br />

the course covers the following: sign vocabulary,<br />

finger spelling, manual numbering system, basic<br />

sentence patterns of ASL, correct use of idioms,<br />

receptive <strong>and</strong> expressive language activities; <strong>and</strong><br />

Deaf/deaf culture in North America. Prerequisite:<br />

Fluency in English strongly recommended.<br />

ASL 102 American Sign Language II<br />

3 Credits (3 Lecture 0 Lab 0 Shop)<br />

3 hrs/wk (3 Hrs. Lecture) *15 wks<br />

This course continues the study <strong>and</strong> prac tice<br />

of basic skills initiated in ASL 101. Emphasizes<br />

comprehending, signing, developing receptive<br />

skills, <strong>and</strong> using the glossing system for written<br />

ASL. Interactive <strong>and</strong> extracurricular activities<br />

increase underst<strong>and</strong>ing of ASL <strong>and</strong> the deaf culture.<br />

Prerequisite: ASL 101 or equivalent.<br />
