The main body <strong>of</strong> the survey is presented in the form <strong>of</strong> individual district<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>iles. The survey collected information on the number <strong>and</strong> volume <strong>of</strong> savings<br />

<strong>and</strong> loans activity. Savings information is cumulative to the 31 st <strong>of</strong> Dec 2000.<br />

Loans activity is disbursement during the year 2000 <strong>and</strong> is not cumulative. Each<br />

district pr<strong>of</strong>ile overviews the main national <strong>and</strong> regional level actor activity <strong>and</strong><br />

also discusses the role <strong>of</strong> local NGOs on the ground.<br />

According to the 2001 <strong>National</strong> Census (including Ampara), the Government<br />

Agent Office’s in the North & East Districts (Batticaloa, Jaffna, Mannar,<br />

Trincomalee <strong>and</strong> Vavuniya) <strong>and</strong> the estimates <strong>of</strong> local authorities in the Wanni<br />

Area, the total population <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong> is estimated at: 16,864,544; 1,582,000;<br />

<strong>and</strong>, 328,000, respectively, giving a total national population estimate <strong>of</strong><br />

18,774,544 people. According to the 2001 <strong>National</strong> Census, the average family<br />

size is estimated at 5.6 people.
