District Note<br />

UNICEF engages in micr<strong>of</strong>inance activities in this district <strong>and</strong> fund Zoa Refugee<br />

Care, who are a key practitioner, as an implementing partner. By the end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

year 2000 Zoa has established S & C groups in 35 villages within the district.<br />

<strong>Micr<strong>of</strong>inance</strong> loans are given for the cultivation <strong>of</strong> highl<strong>and</strong> crops, fishing, animal<br />

husb<strong>and</strong>ry <strong>and</strong> setting up small businesses.<br />

OXFAM work in 7 divisions with 22 villages. They partner with 3 NGOs: SSED<br />

in Kutchaveli, Kinniya, Town & Gravates <strong>and</strong> Thampalagamam; TDGSA in<br />

Kutchaveli; <strong>and</strong>, EUDA in Echilampathu. Oxfam work directly in Mutur, Kantale<br />

<strong>and</strong> Serawila.<br />

The Sarvodaya Trincomalee East District Centre presently has 36 mobilised<br />

societies with approx. 1,440 members practising savings <strong>and</strong> credit for basic<br />

consumption <strong>and</strong> subsistence level, income generation purposes. These activities<br />

are based mainly in agricultural <strong>and</strong> fishing communities in the cleared, uncleared<br />

<strong>and</strong> ‘grey’ areas <strong>of</strong> the district. Presently, 50 Community Based Groups are in the<br />

process <strong>of</strong> being mobilised. SEEDS plan to introduce credit plus services in the<br />

near future.<br />

In recent weeks, the government has announced that Samurdhi operations in the<br />

district are being dramatically scaled up as part <strong>of</strong> its stated aim to establish 75<br />

banks within the first six months <strong>of</strong> the ‘cease-fire agreement’.
