According to the 2001 Census, the total population <strong>of</strong> Colombo is 2,234,146.<br />
Loans<br />
According to the survey, there were 135,055 loans taken in the district during the<br />
year 2000. The total value <strong>of</strong> loans disbursed for the same period is SLR<br />
1,106,638,175. This equates to an average sum <strong>of</strong> SLR 8,193.98 per loan.<br />
In terms <strong>of</strong> population, the total number <strong>and</strong> volume <strong>of</strong> loans referred to in the<br />
table above is the equivalent <strong>of</strong> one loan per 16.54 people or SLR 495.33 per<br />
person in the district for the year 2000.<br />
Savings<br />
Total savings in 2000 amount to SLR 2,372,786,866. A total number <strong>of</strong> 467,409<br />
savings accounts were identified. Excluding Samurdhi <strong>and</strong> TCCSs (for whom<br />
individual savings figures are not available), 467,409 savings accounts totalling<br />
SLR 1,661,654,178 give an average <strong>of</strong> SLR 3,555.03 per individual savings<br />
account.<br />
In terms <strong>of</strong> population, the total amount <strong>of</strong> savings as <strong>of</strong> the close <strong>of</strong> the year<br />
2000 is the equivalent <strong>of</strong> 1,062.06 per person in the district or one savings<br />
account per 4.78 people
