According to the 2001 Census, the total population <strong>of</strong> Matara is 761,236.<br />

Loans<br />

According to the survey, there were 138,045 loans taken in the district during the<br />

year 2000. The total value <strong>of</strong> loans disbursed for the same period is SLR<br />

1,294,094,524. Excluding NGOs, this equates to an average sum <strong>of</strong> SLR 9,372.22<br />

per loan.<br />

In terms <strong>of</strong> population, the total number <strong>and</strong> volume <strong>of</strong> loans referred to in the<br />

table above is the equivalent <strong>of</strong> one loan per 5.51 people or SLR 1,699.99 per<br />

person in the district for the year 2000.<br />

Savings<br />

Total savings in 2000 amount to SLR 1,743,589,075. A total <strong>of</strong> 507,846 savings<br />

accounts were identified. Excluding Agromart (who do not provide savings<br />

services), Samurdhi <strong>and</strong> TCCSs (for whom individual savings figures are not<br />

available) <strong>and</strong> local NGOs, 504,561 savings accounts totalling SLR<br />

1,499,242,612 give an average <strong>of</strong> SLR 2,971.38 per individual savings account.<br />

In terms <strong>of</strong> population, the total amount <strong>of</strong> savings as <strong>of</strong> the close <strong>of</strong> the year<br />

2000 is the equivalent <strong>of</strong> SLR 2,290.47 per person in the district or one savings<br />

per 1.5 people.
