Local NGOs<br />

5 NGOs were identified in the survey. A total <strong>of</strong> 262 S&C groups <strong>and</strong> 5,194<br />

members were recorded.<br />

Loans<br />

A total number <strong>of</strong> 212 loans were issued in the year 2000. A total sum <strong>of</strong> SLR<br />

4,832,550 was disbursed for the same period. Of the 3 NGOs who provided<br />

complete loans information, an average <strong>of</strong> SLR 7,191.27 per loan can be<br />

calculated. Interest on loans ranges between 8% <strong>and</strong> 24%. The Rural<br />

Development Foundation charge 8% flat <strong>and</strong> SEED charge 24% flat.<br />

Savings<br />

A total number <strong>of</strong> 2,535 savings accounts existed by the end <strong>of</strong> the year 2000. A<br />

total sum <strong>of</strong> SLR 5,604,761 was saved. Of the 3 NGOs who gave complete<br />

information on savings, an average <strong>of</strong> SLR 2,210.95 per savings account can be<br />

calculated. Interest on savings ranges between 8% <strong>and</strong> 17%.<br />

District Notes<br />

1 <strong>of</strong> the NGOs identified is actually a federation. In the year 2000 it issued 16<br />

loans with a total value <strong>of</strong> SLR 3, 328, 000 at an average <strong>of</strong> SLR 208,000 per<br />

loan.<br />

DRC fund SEED <strong>and</strong> the Rural Development Foundation in Vavuniya. In recent<br />

years DRC have funded a total <strong>of</strong> SLR 20,400,000 to these 2 NGOs.<br />

Oxfam’s Sustainable Livelihoods Development Project works in 8 villages<br />

throughout the district with over 400 families. In addition, Oxfam have recently<br />

started working in one <strong>of</strong> the welfare centres.<br />

UNDP are currently in the process <strong>of</strong> developing an innovative new model <strong>of</strong><br />

micr<strong>of</strong>inance intervention linked to SANASA <strong>and</strong> village based Apex<br />

organisation. Please see the UNDP ‘pr<strong>of</strong>ile’ in Part A <strong>of</strong> this report for more<br />

details.<br />

Sewa <strong>Lanka</strong> operate at least 86 ‘Sewa Societies’ in Vavuniya. Adequate<br />

information on savings <strong>and</strong> loan activities was not forthcoming. However, it is<br />

known that Sewa <strong>Lanka</strong> have received funding from UNHCR <strong>and</strong> that in the<br />

Sewa Societies current savings amount to approximately SLR 3,000,000 <strong>and</strong> loan<br />

funds are approximately SLR 8,400,000.
