According to the 2001 Census, the total population <strong>of</strong> K<strong>and</strong>y is 1,272,463.<br />

Loans<br />

According to the survey, there were 160,515 loans taken in the district during the<br />

year 2000. The total value <strong>of</strong> loans disbursed for the same period is SLR<br />

1,049,154,528. Excluding NGOs, this equates to an average sum <strong>of</strong> SLR 6,519.70<br />

per loan.<br />

In terms <strong>of</strong> population, the total number <strong>and</strong> volume <strong>of</strong> loans referred to in the<br />

table above is the equivalent <strong>of</strong> one loan per 7.93 people or SLR 824.51 per<br />

person in the district for the year 2000.<br />

Savings<br />

Total savings in 2000 amount to SLR 1,443,113,367. A total <strong>of</strong> 522,409 savings<br />

accounts were identified. Excluding Samurdhi <strong>and</strong> TCCSs (for whom individual<br />

savings figures are not available) <strong>and</strong> local NGOs, 511,678 savings accounts<br />

totalling SLR 1,181,728,425 give an average <strong>of</strong> SLR 2,309.52 per individual<br />

savings account.<br />

In terms <strong>of</strong> population, the total amount <strong>of</strong> savings as <strong>of</strong> the close <strong>of</strong> the year<br />

2000 is the equivalent <strong>of</strong> SLR 1,134.11 per person in the district or one savings<br />

account per 2.44 people.
