Local NGOs<br />

1 NGO was identified in the survey. A total <strong>of</strong> 5 village societies <strong>and</strong> 1300<br />

members were recorded.<br />

Loans<br />

A total number <strong>of</strong> 137 loans were issued in the year 2000. A total sum <strong>of</strong> SLR<br />

900,000 was disbursed for the same period. An average <strong>of</strong> SLR 6569.34 per loan<br />

can be calculated. Interest rates on loans are 36%.<br />

Savings<br />

A total number <strong>of</strong> 1300 savings accounts existed at the end <strong>of</strong> the year 2000. A<br />

total sum <strong>of</strong> SLR 700,000 was saved. An average savings <strong>of</strong> SLR 538.46 per<br />

account can be calculated. Interest rate on savings are 3%.<br />

District Notes<br />

The IFAD <strong>and</strong> (earlier) SIDA funded North Central province Participatory<br />

Development Project works in 15 <strong>of</strong> the 21 divisions in the district <strong>and</strong> has<br />

mobilised 20,929 families into 3,093 small groups <strong>and</strong> 377 village organisations<br />

as <strong>of</strong> the end <strong>of</strong> June 2001. This represents approx. 1/3 rd <strong>of</strong> all families in these<br />

divisions. Savings have commenced in all <strong>of</strong> these groups <strong>and</strong> currently total SLR<br />

13,800,000. 150 village organisations have received SLR 25,000 each totalling<br />

SLR 3,750,000 in RLF funds.<br />

Sewa <strong>Lanka</strong> operates in Anuradhapura but was not forthcoming with adequate<br />

information for the survey. The DRC funded component <strong>of</strong> Sewa <strong>Lanka</strong>’s loan<br />

activity is listed in the main table above. Savings are kept at small group level,<br />

but DRC were unable to provide figures on savings activity.<br />

SCN funds micr<strong>of</strong>inance activities with Samadheepa Samaja Kendraya who<br />

implement programmes in 10 divisions in the district with funds ranging between<br />

SLR 30,000 to SLR 50,000 for loans between SLR 2000 to SLR 10,000.
