Informatika a felsőoktatásban 2008 Debrecen, 2008. augusztus 27-29.DEVELOPMENT OF BALLAST-FREE AND EASY-TO-USE CONTENTMANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND ITS APPLICATION SDPDEVELOPMENT OF BALLAST-FREE AND EASY-TO-USE CONTENT MANAGEMENTSYSTEMS AND ITS APPLICATION SDPKyriakidis Theodoros 1 , Schleusener Heinz 21 Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 2 Technische Universität BerlinAbstractA content management system (CMS) is a system used to manage the content of a Web site.Content management systems are deployed primarily for interactive use by a potentially large numberof contributors. There is a vast variety of CMS applications based on various programming languageplatforms (PHP, Java and Perl most notably) and database systems (MySQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQLetc.). It is a matter of question though, whether a common man can effectively make use of so saiduser-friendly CMS solutions. Experience has shown, at least for the majority of the existingapplications, that a great commitment is required from the user, if not special knowledge, andcomputer skills. The main goal of the project was therefore to define the essential properties of a CMS and tocreate a really user-friendly solution. Compromise has only been made only as far as some exoticfeatures of a state-of-the-art CMS are concerned. Basic and efficient functionality is more than presentin what was later named SDP (Systima Diaheirisis Periehomenou, the Greek transliteration for CMS).Our solution SDP provides authoring (and other) tools designed to allow users with little or noknowledge of programming or mark-up languages to create and manage content with surprising easeof use. It also doesn't require FTP data transfer. It employs a MySQL database to store content andother artifacts needed by the system. Upon request web pages are rendered through a series of queriesin the content database bank, using PHP.The main features of this completely web based application are: 2 level menu structure(parent – child), 3 different element types (hyper-category, text, list), completely dynamic listtemplates, user authentication with rights system and superuser section with database and useradministration tool. Extensive testing has proved it to be feather weight, cross platform/browsercompatible and user friendly. As result of these checks, SDP will be used initially for managing theweb representation of a research group at the TU Berlin.KeywordsCMS, MySQL, PHP, Content Management System, SDP, TU Berlin96
