IBM ConfidentialAppendix C. Silent installationAdministrators can install Data Protection for Exchange using silent installation. Asilent installation runs on its own without any intervention so that administratorsare freed from the task of monitoring the installation <strong>and</strong> providing input to dialogboxes. This method is especially useful when Data Protection for Exchange mustbe installed on a number of different computers with identical hardware. Forexample, a company may have 25 Exchange Servers spread out across 25 differentsites. To ensure a consistent configuration <strong>and</strong> to avoid having 25 different peopleenter Data Protection for Exchange parameters, an administrator may choose toproduce an unattended install <strong>and</strong> make it available to the 25 sites by cutting <strong>and</strong>sending out 25 CDs or by placing the unattended install package on a file server.You can perform a silent installation using one of the following methods:SetupProgramUse the setup comm<strong>and</strong> with the comm<strong>and</strong>-line invocation <strong>and</strong> specialsilent installation options.Microsoft Installer (MSI)Use msiexec.exe to install the MSI package.The following options can be used with both silent installation methods:Table 15. Note the following syntax requirementswhen invoking the /v option:v A backslash (\) must be placed in front of anyquotation marks (" ") that reside within existingquotation marks.v Do not include a space between the /v comm<strong>and</strong>line option <strong>and</strong> its arguments.v Multiple parameters entered with the /v comm<strong>and</strong>line option must be separated with a space.v You can create a log file by specifying the directory<strong>and</strong> filename at the end of the comm<strong>and</strong>. Thedirectory must already exist at the time a silentinstallation is performed./x Specifies the program is to uninstall the product.addlocal Specifies features to install.allusers Specifies which users can use the installation package.installdir Specifies the directory where Data Protection forExchange is to be installed.131
