76 ANNA ROUSSOUb. Voglio an da re. Itawant-1SG go"I want to go.'In (4a) the Greek subjunctive complement is introduced by the particle na. I willassume that na is actually the subjunctive mood marker (Philippaki-Warburtonand Veloudis 1984). The same realization of mood by means of particles isfound in the other Balkan languages as well (from Terzi 1992):(5) a. Ion vrea sa manince. RomJohn want-3SG PRT eat-3SGb. Jani do te haje. AlbJohn want-3SG PRT eat-3SG'John wants to eat.'The subjunctive particles, corresponding to the MGrk na, are sa in Romanian(Motapanyane 1994, Terzi 1992) and te in Albanian (Turano 1994, Terzi 1992).I will also assume, following a number of studies in the literature, that the subjunctiveparticles are the realization of the mood head, which is situated betweenC and I/T in the clause structure (cf. Philippaki-Warburton 1992, Rivero 1994,Terzi 1992, Turano 1994, Tsimpli 1995, among others), as illustrated in (6)below:(6) L C p C [ MoodP Mood [ TP T]]]In addition to having a subjunctive particle, Albanian and Romanian also allowfor a specialized subjunctive C. ca and qe respectively:(7) a. Ion vrea ca sa manince RomJohn want-3SG that PRT eat-3SGb. Jani do qe te haje. AlbJohn want-3SG that PRT eat-3SG'John wants him/her to eat.'Modern Greek, on the other hand, lacks this option. Futhermore, as expected, the subjunctive is incompatible with the indicative C, realized as ca inRomanian, se in Albanian, and oti in Greek:(8) a. *lon vrea ca sa manince Romthe John want-3SG that PRT eat-3SGb. *Jani do se te haje. Albthe John want-3SG that PRT eat-3SGc. *O Janis deli oti na fai. MGrkthe John want-3SG that PRT eat-3SG'John wants (him/her) to eat.'
