CHAPTER 6CHARACTEROPTIONSIllus. by S. Wood154attack, page 154 of thePlayer’s Handbook). If yousucceed, all your allies whothreaten your foe gain a +2 bonusto AC against that foe’s attacks until thebeginning of your next turn, providedthat you continue to threaten that foe for that time.WOODLAND ARCHER [TACTICAL]You have honed your archery ability in the wilds of the forest.Prerequisites: Point Blank Shot, base attack bonus +6.Benefit: The Woodland Archer feat enables the use ofthree tactical maneuvers.Adjust for Range: To use this maneuver, you must shoot aprojectile weapon against a foe and miss. Subsequent shotsyou take against that foe this round gain a +4 bonus, becauseyou’re able to quickly adjust your aim to compensate.Pierce the Foliage: To use this maneuver, you must hit a foewith a ranged attack despite the miss chance caused by concealment.Shots you take against that foe in the next rounddon’t incur the miss chance because you’re able to exactlyduplicate your draw and aim.Moving Sniper: To use this maneuver, you must succeed ona sniping attack (see the Hide skill description, page 76 ofthe Player’s Handbook), both hitting your intended target andsuccessfully hiding thereafter. If no one sees you, you canmake a sniping attack again in the following round, taking asingle move after your attack and before you hide (characterswithout this feat can only shoot and hide, not move as well). As long as you continue to hit the target and avoid detectionfrom an enemy, you can make a sniping attack on the moveeach round.Special: A fighter may select Woodland Archer as one ofhis fighter bonus feats. While a raptoran sorcerer distracts an owlbear from above, her alliesuse the benefit of the Wolfpack feat to attack the creature’s flanksRACIALSUBSTITUTION LEVELSA substitution level is a level of a given class that you takeinstead of the level described for the standard class. Selectinga substitution level is not the same as multiclassing—youremain within the class for which the substitution levelis taken. The class features of the substitution level simplyreplace those of the standard level. To qualify to take a racial substitution level, you must beof the proper race. For instance, to select a racial substitutionlevel of elf wizard, you must be an elf.The three races featured in this book—elf, halfling, andraptoran—each have racial substitution levels for threeclasses. Essentially, each set of substitution levels presentsa racially flavored variant standard class for your game. TheDM can add more racial substitution level options (such asfor an elf bard or a halfling ranger) as desired, using the onespresented here as guidelines. For each class with racial substitution levels, you can selecteach substitution level only at a specific class level. When youtake a substitution level for your class at a given level, you giveup the class features gained at that level for the standard class, and you get the substitution level features instead. You can’tgo back and gain the class features for the level you swappedout—when you take your next level in the standard class, yougain the next higher level as if you had gained the previouslevel normally.
For instance, if you take the elf paladin substitution levelfor 3rd level, you forever lose the class features normallygained by a standard 3rd-level paladin (such as aura of courage),gaining instead the racial substitution class featuresfor a 3rd-level elf paladin (such as aura of freedom; seeTable 6–2). When you gain another level in paladin, yougain the normal 4th-level benefits of the standard paladinclass, as given in Table 3–12: The Paladin, page 43 of thePlayer’s Handbook.Unless noted otherwise in the description of a racialsubstitution level class feature, a character who takes aracial substitution level gains spellcasting ability (increasesin spells per day and spells known, if applicable) as if she hadtaken this level in the standard class.A character need not take all the substitution levels providedfor a class. For instance, a halfling rogue might decideto take only the racial substitution level at 1st level, ignoringthe other substitution levels. The description of each substitution level class featureexplains what occurs to the standard class ability not gained,if that ability would normally increase at a specific rate (suchas the paladin’s smite evil ability). When a substitution level changes the standard class’sHit Die or class skill list, the change applies only to thatspecific substitution level, not to any other class levels. Ahalfling who takes the halfling monk substitution level as abeginning character gains 6 hit points (from the substitutionlevel’s d6 Hit Die) and gains an additional 1d6 hit points foreach additional halfling monk substitution level she takeslater in her career, but she gains the normal d8 Hit Die forall standard monk levels.ELF PALADINThough elves typically tend toward chaos and freedomover law and order, an elf paladin can become a beaconof righteousness. He gives up some of his single-mindeddedication in exchange for abilities that work well with hisracial aptitudes.Hit Die: d10.RequirementsTo take an elf paladin substitution level, a character must bean elf about to take his 1st, 3rd, or 5th level of paladin.Class SkillsElf paladin substitution levels grant the same class skills asthe standard paladin class, plus Survival.Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier (or four timesthis number as a beginning character).Class FeaturesAll the following are features of the elf paladin’s racialsubstitution levels.Ranged Smite Evil (Su): An elf paladin can only deliverhis smite evil attacks with a longbow (or composite longbow)or shortbow (or composite shortbow). The target must bewithin 30 feet for the paladin to use this ability. This abilityotherwise functions identically to the normal smite evil classfeature described on page 44 of the Player’s Handbook. This substitution feature replaces the standard paladin’sclass feature of smite evil. At each level at which the paladinwould normally gain an additional daily use of smite evil, theelf paladin instead gains a daily use of ranged smite evil.Aura of Freedom (Su): A 3rd-level elf paladin radiates anaura that helps his allies resist effects that would influencetheir minds. Each ally within 10 feet of him gains a +4 moralebonus on saving throws against enchantment effects. Thisability functions while the paladin is conscious, but not ifhe is unconscious or dead. This substitution feature replaces the standard paladin’sability of aura of courage.Unicorn Mount (Sp): A 5th-level elf paladin gains theservice of a unicorn to serve him in his crusade against evil. This ability is identical to the paladin’s special mount classfeature, except that the paladin is treated as six levels lowerthan normal for the purpose of determining the mount’sbonus HD, natural armor adjustment, and Strength adjustment(but not other special abilities). The unicorn serves asa loyal steed regardless of the paladin’s gender. For example, an elf paladin’s unicorn mount doesn’t gainthe adjusted statistics of a 5th-level paladin’s mount (+2 HD, +4natural armor adjustment, and +1 Strength adjustment—seepage 45 of the Player’s Handbook) until the paladin is 11thlevel. It gains the other special abilities of a paladin’s mountat the normal levels (empathic link, improved evasion, sharespells, and share saving throws at 5th level, improved speed at8th level, command at 11th level, and spell resistance at 15thlevel). The unicorn mount may only use its command abilityon horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules. This substitution feature replaces the standard paladin’sclass feature of special mount.ELF RANGERThe elf ranger combines sylvan grace with deadly skill, moving effortlessly through the wilds in search of his prey.He isn’t quite as tough as a typical ranger but enjoys extrabonuses against his race’s favored enemies and can befrienda powerful elven hound.Hit Die: d6.CHAPTER 6CHARACTEROPTIONSTable 6–2: Elf Paladin Racial Substitution LevelsHit Die: d10BaseAttack Fort Ref WillLevel Bonus Save Save Save Special Spells per Day1st +1 +2 +0 +0 Aura of good, detect evil, ranged smite evil 1/day —3rd +3 +3 +1 +1 Aura of freedom, divine health —5th +5 +4 +1 +1 Ranged smite evil 2/day, unicorn mount As standard paladin155
