One highlight of the festival is theFlight of the Lady (see page 77) at midnight. Many unattachedraptorans choose their season’s mate on this night.Eggs conceived during the Long Night are supposed to beparticularly blessed.During the Long Night, raptorans’ fly speed increases by5 feet.Wingsweep: A raptoran’s return from her Walk of theFour Winds is marked with a great ceremony celebratingher successful rite of passage. This event is always held ina cavern or chamber that can only be reached by flyingcreatures and presided over by a priest of Duthila (seepage 77). The returning raptoran is welcomed and thecommunity proclaims her entry into full adulthood. Itis during this ceremony that the raptoran announces heradult name, taking her place among them. She then plucksa feather from her wing and adds it to the community’scollection of feathers. The solemn rites conclude with theraptoran making an aerial circuit of the settlement. Onceshe returns to the cave, merriment and feasting replacethe earlier somber tone.During Wingsweep, all raptorans who can fly gain 3temporary hit points.OTHER HOLIDAYSCreating new holidays for your campaign is relatively simple.Although most holidays do not have game effects associatedwith them, those that do can quickly become importantevents in a campaign.Regardless of race, class, or cultural affiliation, nocharacter should have access to more than three majorholidays with game effects. In addition, be careful aboutgiving significant combat benefits to holidays that lastfor more than a day or two. Table 8–8 provides a list ofoccasions that might be celebrated with holidays, alongwith suggestions for how long the holiday would last andthe game effect associated with those who take part inthe celebration.FRIENDS OF THE WILDElves, halflings, raptorans, and other races of the wild typicallysee the creatures of their homelands as allies, ratherthan as prey or enemies. Here are a few potential friends foryour wild character.BRIXASHULTYMedium AnimalHit Dice: 2d8+6 (15 hp)Initiative: +3Speed: 40 ft. It has curving horns like a ram’s andbig feet with cloven hooves. The brixashulty (brixa for short) is a goatlike creature thatthe halflings have bred to serve a beast of burden, guardanimal, and source of food and fiber for textiles. Halflingslike to boast that a brixashulty is a surefooted as a mule,
as loyal as a dog, as calm as a milk cow, and astough as a badger.A brixashulty doe stands about 3 feet tall atthe shoulder, measures about 5 feet longfrom nose to rump, and weighs about 325pounds. Males, called bucks, are about thesame height and length but slightly heavier. Most brixashulties are white or gray, but black, brown, or red individuals aren’tuncommon, and a few have white coatswith large spots of gray, black, brown, orred. A brixashulty usually has green orblue eyes.Brixashulties thrive on a diet of grass andleaves but can eat almost anything organic.Brixashulty meat often proves stringy andslightly tough, but well flavored (thoughmany people find the taste overly strong).Well-fed females produce milk for aboutnine months out of a year, and a well-managedherd can produce milk year-round.Both does and bucks produce a fleecesuitable for making woolen cloth.Brixashulties are surefooted, eventempered, and fairly strong. They make excellentpack and draft animals. They can carry riders of up toSmall size.CombatBrixashulties remain alert and sensitive to the presence ofintruders or predators. In spite of their even temper, theybecome aggressive in the presence of strange sight, sounds, orsmells. When annoyed, they tend to charge foes and deliver adangerous gore attack. In a battle, brixashulties instinctivelyband together to guard each other’s flanks and to concentratetheir attacks; using this tactic, a herd of brixashulties canoften fend off a pack of wolves.Knockback (Ex): A gore attack from a brixashulty can literallydrive back a foe. When a brixa hits with its gore attack,it can immediately attempt a bull rush without entering thefoe’s space or provoking an attack of opportunity. The brixamakes a Strength check with a +7 bonus, which includes a+4 racial bonus. If the bull rush succeeds, the foe is drivenback 5 feet and must make a DC 12 Reflex save or fall down.If being driven back would force the opponent into a barrieror into a square where it cannot stop (such as a wall or a squarethat already contains another creature), the foe falls down inits square instead. The Reflex save DC is Strength-based.Skills: A brixashulty has a +2 racial bonus on Balance,Jump, and Listen checks. A brixashulty uses its Dexteritymodifier for Jump checks.Training a BrixashultyA character with the Handle Animal skill can train a brixashultyas noted in the Handle Animal skill description onpages 74–75 of the Player’s Handbook.BrixashultyA creature of up to Small size can ride a brixashulty usinga riding saddle or a military saddle. A brixashulty trainedfor combat riding can fight while carrying a rider, but therider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a DC10 Ride check.A brixashulty kid is worth 30 gp and is ready for trainingby age two. It can live for up to 50 years. Brixashultiesbucks are usually trained for combat riding. Brixashultydoes are usually trained for guarding and also know thework and stay tricks. A fully trained adult brixashultycosts 150 gp.Carrying Capacity: A light load for a brixashulty is up to75 pounds; a medium load, 76–150 pounds; and a heavy load,151–225 pounds.Brixashulties as Animal CompanionsA halfling who has the animal companion class feature canchoose a brixashulty as an animal companion.A nonhalfling also can have a brixashulty companion, buther effective level for the animal companion class featuremust be 4th or higher, and her effective level for determiningthe brixashulty companion’s abilities is reducedby three. For example, if a 4th-level half-elf druid has abrixashulty companion, that brixashulty has only 1st-levelcompanion abilities.Illus. by S. WoodCHAPTER 8CAMPAIGNS INTHE WILD187
