In <strong>the</strong> same way, it is <strong>the</strong> knowledge ga<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> heart that<br />

counts before <strong>the</strong> Div<strong>in</strong>e. Aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> quote <strong>the</strong> Quran:<br />

God will not take you <strong>to</strong> task for a slip<br />

<strong>in</strong> your oaths: but He will take you <strong>to</strong> task for what your hearts<br />

have earned: and God is All-forgiv<strong>in</strong>g, All-clement.<br />

Likewise, <strong>the</strong> knowledge of <strong>the</strong> heart at least at some level and<br />

especially for those whose path <strong>to</strong> God is <strong>the</strong> path of knowledge, is<br />

considered as essential for salvation. Many traditional masters have <strong>in</strong><br />

fact written that those who refuse <strong>to</strong> identify <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> heart<br />

or center of <strong>the</strong>ir liv<strong>in</strong>g forfeit <strong>the</strong> possibility of enter<strong>in</strong>g Paradise, which<br />

already resides at <strong>the</strong> center of <strong>the</strong> heart as <strong>the</strong> famous dictum of Christ<br />

“The K<strong>in</strong>gdom of God is with <strong>in</strong> you” testifies. The Quran asserts:<br />

We have created for Gehenna many j<strong>in</strong>n and men;<br />

They have hearts, but understand not with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

(lahum qul¶bun lå yafqahuna bihå)<br />

In <strong>the</strong> ¡ad¥th literature <strong>the</strong>re are also numerous references <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

knowledge of <strong>the</strong> heart, a knowledge that is pr<strong>in</strong>cipial and essential<br />

and identified with faith as <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g ÷ad¥th quoted by Bukhår¥<br />

demonstrates:<br />

Faith descended at <strong>the</strong> root of <strong>the</strong> hearts of men, <strong>the</strong>n came<br />

down <strong>the</strong> Quran and (people) learned <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Quran and<br />

<strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> example (of <strong>the</strong> Prophet). 17<br />

Also, only <strong>the</strong> heart that grasps for knowledge is considered<br />

praiseworthy, for as <strong>the</strong> Prophet has said: “Blessed is he who makes<br />

his heart grasp<strong>in</strong>g.” 18 It could <strong>in</strong> fact be said that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> language of <strong>the</strong>
