Mullå |adrå and <strong>the</strong> Full Flower<strong>in</strong>g of Prophetic <strong>Philosophy</strong> 229<br />
al-muta‘åliyah <strong>in</strong> such a way that <strong>the</strong> organic l<strong>in</strong>k between objective<br />
revelation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of prophecy and <strong>in</strong>ner illum<strong>in</strong>ation as “partial<br />
prophecy” became central <strong>to</strong> a hierarchical epistemology that characterizes<br />
his <strong>to</strong>tal syn<strong>the</strong>sis between prophetic and philosophic truth or<br />
religion and philosophy.<br />
Angelology<br />
There is ultimately no prophecy without angelology. In <strong>the</strong> ancient Greek<br />
world where Pythagoras and Parmenides philosophized, <strong>the</strong>se angelic<br />
realities were identified as gods of <strong>the</strong> Greek pan<strong>the</strong>on, and <strong>in</strong> H<strong>in</strong>duism<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are identified with various H<strong>in</strong>du deities. In <strong>the</strong> Abrahamic<br />
world, however, <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>telligible and lum<strong>in</strong>ous substances are identified<br />
as angels, and <strong>the</strong> traditional philosophies of all <strong>the</strong> three mono<strong>the</strong>istic<br />
religions have dealt with <strong>the</strong>m on some level as we see for example <strong>in</strong><br />
nearly all <strong>the</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> West <strong>in</strong>fluenced by <strong>the</strong> Dionysian corpus. 15<br />
In <strong>Islamic</strong> philosophy aga<strong>in</strong> it was Ibn S¥nå who was <strong>the</strong> first <strong>to</strong> seek <strong>to</strong><br />
create a systematic correlation between <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>telligences of <strong>the</strong> philosophers<br />
and <strong>the</strong> angelic realm as mentioned <strong>in</strong> religious sources.<br />
Suhraward¥ expanded greatly <strong>the</strong> philosophical study of angels, mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
correlations between <strong>the</strong> vertical and horizontal orders of light <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> ishråq¥ universe and not only <strong>Islamic</strong> but also Mazdean orders of<br />
angels. 16 In relat<strong>in</strong>g angelology <strong>to</strong> both cosmology and epistemology,<br />
Ibn S¥nå and especially Suhraward¥ had already paved <strong>the</strong> way for<br />
Mullå |adrå, but aga<strong>in</strong> this important dimension of prophetic philosophy<br />

Escha<strong>to</strong>logy and Sacred Psychology<br />
Left <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own devices, <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary human m<strong>in</strong>d and imag<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
have no means of ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g knowledge of escha<strong>to</strong>logical realities, and<br />
ord<strong>in</strong>ary human knowledge of <strong>the</strong> psyche rema<strong>in</strong>s limited <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> most<br />
outward aspects of <strong>the</strong> soul. The current philosophical scene exemplifies<br />
fully <strong>the</strong> truth of this assertion. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> rise of rationalism, ma<strong>in</strong>stream<br />
Western philosophers have shown practically no <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> escha<strong>to</strong>logy,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> rare few who have, such as <strong>the</strong> Swedish visionary Emmanuel<br />
Swedenborg, have been philosophically speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>tally marg<strong>in</strong>alized.<br />
As for psychology, <strong>the</strong> modern discipl<strong>in</strong>e us<strong>in</strong>g that name, does not<br />
know what <strong>to</strong> do with transpersonal psychology, not <strong>to</strong> speak of traditional<br />
psychologies of <strong>the</strong> Oriental traditions based on <strong>in</strong>tellection and<br />
spiritual methods that enable one <strong>to</strong> penetrate <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> depths of <strong>the</strong><br />
psyche, <strong>to</strong> transform it and ultimately <strong>to</strong> transcend it.
