88 Part 2: Philosophical Issues<br />

was marked by a ra<strong>the</strong>r varied philosophical life, and at least three<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ct trends are discernible: that of M¥r Dåmåd and his students,<br />

who followed Ibn S¥nå with a Suhrawardian color; that of Mullå Rajab<br />

‘Al¥ Tabr¥z¥, whose views are somewhat similar <strong>to</strong> Proclus’ <strong>in</strong>terpretation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g of Pla<strong>to</strong> and who considered <strong>the</strong> Div<strong>in</strong>e Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple<br />

<strong>to</strong> be above both Be<strong>in</strong>g and non-Be<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>to</strong>tally discont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

with <strong>the</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> of existence; and f<strong>in</strong>ally Mullå S • adrå and his followers,<br />

such as Mullå Mu±s<strong>in</strong> Fay∂ Kåshån¥, who transformed <strong>the</strong> “essentialistic”<br />

metaphysics of Suhraward¥ <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> an “existentialistic” one. 11 In<br />

his Asfår, al-Shawåhid al-rub¶biyyah, and al-Mashå‘ir, 12 Mullå S • adrå has<br />

given <strong>the</strong> most extensive and systematic exposition of <strong>the</strong> “philosophy<br />

of be<strong>in</strong>g” <strong>to</strong> be found anywhere <strong>in</strong> Islam, comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> vision of <strong>the</strong><br />

gnostics and <strong>the</strong> logical acumen of <strong>the</strong> Peripatetics. His metaphysics,<br />

based on <strong>the</strong> three pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of <strong>the</strong> unity, gradation, and pr<strong>in</strong>cipiality<br />

of be<strong>in</strong>g marks <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g of a new chapter <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development of<br />

<strong>Islamic</strong> philosophy and more particularly on<strong>to</strong>logy. 13<br />

The doctr<strong>in</strong>es of Mullå S • adrå concern<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>g were so profound<br />

and all-embrac<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y found <strong>the</strong>ir echo among most of <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Persian philosophers of <strong>the</strong> centuries that followed and were also<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluential among many th<strong>in</strong>kers of Muslim India. As far as Persia is<br />

concerned, such thirteenth/n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century figures as Mullå ‘Al¥<br />

N¨r¥, ¡åjj¥ Mullå Håd¥ Sabziwår¥, and Mullå ‘Al¥ Mudarris added<br />

important commentaries <strong>to</strong> Mullå |adrå’s works on <strong>the</strong> subject of<br />

on<strong>to</strong>logy. Moreover, dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> twentieth century such traditional<br />

masters as M¥rzå Mahd¥ Āshtiyån¥ and Sayyid Mu±ammad Kåπim<br />

‘A∑∑år cont<strong>in</strong>ued this particular tradition of philosophy <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong><br />

study of be<strong>in</strong>g is carried out through a highly developed dialectic but<br />

is ultimately based upon <strong>the</strong> experience of Be<strong>in</strong>g and its epiphanies,<br />

this experience hav<strong>in</strong>g been made possible through <strong>the</strong> aid of Be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Its</strong>elf <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of that objective <strong>the</strong>ophany of <strong>the</strong> Universal Intellect,<br />

which is prophecy and <strong>the</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g of a revelation that creates a traditional<br />

universe.<br />

<br />

It is hardly possible <strong>to</strong> do justice <strong>in</strong> a short space <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> depth<br />

and richness of this later <strong>Islamic</strong> philosophical school <strong>in</strong>sofar as <strong>the</strong><br />

study of be<strong>in</strong>g is concerned. Men of great <strong>in</strong>telligence and perspicacity<br />

have spent lifetimes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> study and contemplation of <strong>the</strong>se doctr<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

But it is possible <strong>to</strong> summarize at least some of <strong>the</strong> salient<br />

features of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream of this school, which culm<strong>in</strong>ated with Mullå<br />

S • adrå and his disciples.
