APPENDIX PRAYER A — SPECIMEN DEFINEDPRAYERSSo we, the worthless, have no peace withoutour Beloved.If the Beloved reveals Himself not in the house(body), the house, nay the very town whereone lives is like a desert,And all the make-up and ornamentation of thebody become useless.In the absence of the Beloved, all friendsand relations appear like angels of death(Yamaduts).Nanak prayeth: kindly grant me the gift of ThyHoly Word,And unite me with the Lord, who abidesforever. 7My mind yearns for the sight of the Lord, asdoth a thirsty man for water.My heart is pierced with the love’s dart frommy Lord and He alone knows my miserablestate.Whosoever narrates to me the tales of myBeloved, he alone is a brother unto me.Come together ye brothers, accept the Master’sWord and sing songs of my Beloved.O Lord! fulfill Nanak’s desire: Grant him Thyholy vision, the harbinger of peace.O mother! how can I find my Beloved, the Lordof my soul?I am not beautiful, nor wise, nor strong;I am a stranger come from afar,127
