PREREQUISITES PRAYER DEFINEDPRAYERFaith is the keynote of success in all ourendeavors. We must, then, have firm and fullfaith in the competency of the Master. With loveand humility we must make an approach tohim if we want to make a beginning in SpiritualScience. We must pray to him sincerely from thedepth of our heart. We should think it fortunateindeed if in his grace he accepts us for impartingknowledge of Para Vidya — the Science ofknowledge of Self and knowledge of God —which in fact is the seed-knowledge from whichall knowledge springs.(ii) Complete Absorption. The next essential inthis connection is complete absorption. Whileoffering prayer we must forget everything else,including our body and our bodily relations.Singleness of purpose is a sine qua non forhitting the target. It is common knowledge thatone cannot serve two Masters at one time. Wehave to choose between God and Mammonand then forget the other. One by one we haveto slip through the various sheaths envelopingthe soul like funeral shrouds in their folds. Thespirit is a living entity and cannot move aheadunless it discards the material appendages inwhich it is wrapped — physical, mental andcausal. By complete absorption, these drop offone by one of their own accord, leaving thespirit free for flights in the spiritual regions.Mohammedans call this absorption Fana-fil-47
