Core components include general management techniques and administrative procedures, budget preparation, humanresources issues, and facilities and resources management. Students will learn how to apply standards for evaluation of libraries andhow to develop functional library programs. Provides a forum for the discussion of the roles of different types of libraries in society.Includes a required field experience. Biennially.LS 385: Automation in the Library Media Center 3 s.h.Surveys the use of automation in the library media center. Topics covered include the selection of computer hardware and softwarefor instructional purposes; use of automated library systems for library management activities such as circulation, acquisition, andcataloging; and the importance of computer networks to areas including resource sharing, professional development, and fiscalplanning. Prerequisite: ED 217 or permission of instructor. Biennially.LS 455: Special Topics in Librarianship 3 s.h.In-depth discussion, study, and research of a selected topic related to the role of the library in responding to social issues, serviceto special groups, or problem areas such as media and minorities, OCLC on-line bibliographic control, and media programs for thegifted. On demand.LS 457: Independent Study / Seminar 1-3 s.h.Students explore in-depth a facet of librarianship according to need or interest, under the direction of a faculty member of thedepartment. Special area to be approved by a faculty committee. Includes development of research techniques and the preparation ofa scholarly paper or completion of a special project. On demand.LS 459: Media, Methods, and the Curriculum 3 s.h.Introduces planning for the effective use of school library media services in cooperation with the instructional staff. Examinesschool library media philosophies and educational objectives, the process of developing a library media program, and the librarian’srole in designing curriculum, developing teaching-learning strategies, and working with teachers, students, and administrators.Includes a three-week practical experience in a school library media center. Prerequisites: LS 257, 258, either 356 or 358, and ED327. Annually.LS 470: Internship in Librarianship 3-6 s.h.Provides a laboratory experience in the professional atmosphere of a cooperating library or information center; allows undergraduatestudents who are not interested in school librarianship an opportunity to have an applied field experience in a public or special library.Evaluation based on observation at the field site, an evaluative paper, and participation in professional seminars. Enrollment bypermission of instructor. Each semester.LS 491: Business Reference Sources and Services 3 s.h.Surveys the information sources and services typically found in corporate libraries, public library business information centers,and other specialized libraries with a business clientele. Includes in-depth examination of major business reference tools, as wellas in-depth examination of the special operations, organization, and management of business libraries and departments of businessinformation. Annually.pages i-viiMusic EducationThe curriculum for majors in music education, leadingto the Bachelor of Science in Education degree, combinesa broad requirement in general education with advancedstudy in music theory, history and literature of music,applied music, specialized courses in music education andparticipation in performing organizations. The programprepares prospective public/private school teachers whospecialize in music education with certification in elementaryand secondary (K-12) instrumental, vocal, and general music.The emphasis of the program is twofold: the achievementof significant musical understanding and ability; and thedevelopment of teaching skills and techniques necessaryfor the effective communication of music understandingand abilities to others.A high percentage of graduates find employment intheir chosen fields. Increasing percentages attend graduateschools. Education graduates have secured teaching positionsin districts, private and parochial schools, and churchpositions accross the United States. The Bachelor of Sciencein Education degree (B.S.Ed.) in music education is fullyaccredited by the National Association of Schools of Music,National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education,and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.Prospective music majors are accepted in the departmenton the basis of an audition before a faculty committee fromthe Department of Music.
