Four awardsare made each year, one each to a junior, sophomore, and two freshmanwho major in English or secondary education English. Freshman applicantsmust submit a creative writing or critical essay, recommendationfrom a senior English teacher, and a high school transcript. Scholarshipapplication should be submitted after the student has been accepted at<strong>Clarion</strong> with the English Department at 814-393-2482.Nemmer Award for Outstanding Graduating English Major: Thisaward is given annually to one graduating senior English major. Thereis no application process. Nomination of candidates for the award andselection are made by department members each spring.HistoryHistory Department Foundation Scholarship: To be considered,students must be sophomore or junior standing at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Criteria for selection include academic excellence and service to the Historydepartment. Contact the chair of the History department at 814-393-2546.John Francis Salvucci Scholarship: Established by Mr. and Mrs.Gene Salvucci in memory of their son, John, who graduated from<strong>Clarion</strong> with a History degree in 1981. Incoming freshmen enrolledin the Secondary Education/Social Studies program will be given firstconsideration with second preference given to incoming freshmen thathave declared a History major. To be considered, students must have aminimum SAT total score of 1100 (critical reasoning and math components)and be in the upper two-fifths of his or her high school graduatingclass. Student records are reviewed for this scholarship upon receipt oftheir admissions materials; no scholarship application is required.Mass Media Arts and Journalism andCommunication StudiesJames J. Canelos Scholarship: Annually a scholarship in memory ofalumnus J.J. Canelos is offered to a junior mass media arts and journalismmajor. Eligibility requires a minimum QPA of 3.4. Final selection is madeby department members on the basis of academic record, contributionto the Mass Media Arts and Journalism Department and the university,participation in extracurricular activities, and financial need. Additionalinformation can be obtained from the Mass Media Arts and JournalismDepartment chair at 814-393-2245.<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> Debate Team–Scholarship Opportunities:<strong>Clarion</strong>’s Debate team is proud to be able to provide scholarship opportunitiesfor members of the team. Scholarships are available for bothreturning and incoming students. Awards are based on debate successand take academic and need-based factors into account. For more detailedinformation, contact Jim Lyle, director of the Speech and Debateprogram.James H. Cole Scholarship: Annually, a scholarship in honor ofJames D. Cole, former dean of the School of Communication, is directedtoward second semester undergraduates majoring in mass media arts andjournalism with no fewer than 15 credits and no more than 32 credits.Eligibility also requires a minimum of a 3.0 QPA. Final selection made bydepartment members on the basis of academic achievement, involvementin the Mass Media Arts and Journalism Department and communityservice.Mass Media Arts and Journalism Department Foundation Scholarship:This scholarship awarded annually by department members onthe basis of academic achievement, involvement in the Mass MediaArts and Journalism Department and community service. Eligibilityalso requires a minimum of a 3.0 QPA. Additional information can beobtained from the Mass Media Arts and Journalism Department chairat 814-393-2245.MathematicsCalculus Scholarship: This scholarship is for a declared mathematicsmajor who achieves the highest score on a standardized calculus test.Students must be recommended by faculty members to take the test.The award is available annually through the Mathematics DepartmentEndowment Fund. Mitchell Secondary Education/Mathematics Scholarship: This endowed scholarship was established tobenefit <strong>Clarion</strong> students enrolled in the secondary education/mathematicsdegree program. The award will be made to one or two full-time studentswho have been admitted to the Teacher’s Certification Program and whohave achieved a minimum 3.0 QPA in completed mathematics courses.The Office of the Dean of Education will be responsible for mailing applicationsto all eligible students. In addition to submitting an application,students are required to provide two letters of recommendation. Studentsare eligible to apply for the scholarships for a second year.William and Elizabeth Hart Scholarship: This scholarship establishedto honor former chemistry professor Dr. William Hart. One ormore scholarships are awarded and can be used to pay for tuition, room,board, and some miscellaneous fees, including books. Applicants mustmajor in mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography/earth science, orbiology and have completed 45 credits. They must have a QPA of 3.0overall and 3.3 in mathematics and science course work. Selection shallbe made by competitive examination, testing the student’s ability inmathematics and English. Application deadline is late February. Contactthe Scholarship Committee chair, Dr. Ben Freed, at 814-393-2592 foradditional information.Marlin and Cleva Hartman Scholarship: Established by MarlinHartman, Class of 1959, and Cleva Haight Hartman, Class of 1959,for an incoming freshman that is a son or daughter of a United Statesveteran. Financial need is also considered. First preference is for aMathematics or Mathematics Education major. Second preference is foran Elementary Education major. Strength of academic credential is alsoinfluential. Submit DD214 along with letter requesting to be consideredto the Scholarship Administrator in the <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> AdmissionsOffice. Scholarship awarded by March 1.John F. Kuhn Mathematics Scholarship: This scholarship fundestablished by Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Gendler, with the support of theentire Mathematics Department, to honor the memory of Provost Kuhnby providing scholarships to attract students from underrepresentedpopulations to study mathematics at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Candidates musthave applied for admission to <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> with the intent to bea full time undergraduate student. They must be a member of an underrepresented class and planning to major in mathematics or mathematicseducation. QPA, class rank, SAT or ACT scores and recommendationsfrom mathematics teachers measured by the admissions file.Mathematics Freshman Scholarship: This scholarship is for incomingfreshman mathematics major. To be considered, students musthave outstanding SAT math score and excellent high school grades. Burns in honorof his parents Fred and June McCall Burns. Current student must beseeking a degree in Music, Drama or Mathematics or in the Educationfields of Music, Drama or Mathematics, and possess excellent grades at<strong>Clarion</strong>. Contact the Scholarship Administrator in the Admissions Officefor additional information.The Ruth Bleakney Montgomery Science/Mathematics Scholarship:This endowed scholarship, in memory of Ruth BleakneyMontgomery, is given annually to science and mathematics majors.Preference is given to students from Armstrong County; students from<strong>Clarion</strong> and Jefferson counties are also eligible. Sophomores, juniors, andseniors are eligible, with preference given to sophomores. Contact thedean’s office, College of Arts and Science at 814-393-2328, by April1, for further information.Renewable Mathematics Scholarship: Awarded annually to anincoming freshman majoring in mathematics or mathematics education.Applicants must score at least 1150 (critical reasoning and math components)on the SAT, with at least 600 on the mathematics portion, and beranked in the top fifth of their class. The scholarship is renewable for fouryears if the recipient remains a mathematics or mathematics educationmajor, maintains at least a 3.30 QPA in mathematics, and maintains atleast a 3.00 QPA overall.Helen and Lawrence Smith Scholarships: These scholarships aremade possible by an endowment established by Mrs. Helen Smith inmemory of her husband.
