Graduates who successfullypass the NBRC Written Registry Examination for AdvancedLevel Respiratory Therapists and the Clinical SimulationExamination will earn the credentials Registered RespiratoryTherapist (RRT) and may work in a variety of health caresettings as advanced-level respiratory therapists afterobtaining state licensure.The <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>/UPMC Horizon/UPMCNorthwest Respiratory Care Program is a new programthat is in the accreditation process with the Committeeon Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) and theCommission on Accreditation of Allied Health EducationalPrograms (CAAHEP).Clinical EducationDuring the 14-month clinical phase of the respiratorycare program, students will attend classes and clinicalpracticum five full days per week with some days spent informal respiratory care classes taught at UPMC Northwestand other days spent at assigned clinical sites. Students willalso be required to periodically attend specialty respiratorycare rotations at local and regional health care organizations.Significant travel is required of respiratory care students.Reliable transportation is therefore essential and is at theexpense of the student. Additionally, some weekend andevening rotations may be required.Several local and regional health care organizationswill serve as clinical sites for the respiratory care program.Although student preference for a particular clinical sitewill be considered, students are not guaranteed the clinicalsite(s) of their choice.Admission PolicyAdmission to the Associate of Science in RespiratoryCare–Advanced Level Practitioner Degree Program is atwo-step process that begins with acceptance to <strong>Clarion</strong><strong>University</strong>. Applicants are required to meet the standardadmission criteria for <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. After acceptanceto <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>, students must then be accepted tothe respiratory care program and must also meet additionaladmission criteria required by UPMC Northwest. Admissionto the respiratory care program is competitive and is notguaranteed.Possible prerequisites:• Students who do not place into the appropriate mathlevel (MATH 112 or higher) must take Math 050 orMATH 110 before acceptance to the program.• One year of high school or college biology with aminimum grade of C or better.Note: Biology must have been taken within five years ofentry to <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. If biology has not been takenwithin the time frame, Basic Biology (BIOL 111) will berequired before acceptance to the program.Additional admission criteria required by UPMCNorthwest:• Successful hospital interview (will include a writingsample),• Satisfactory score on PSB Health Occupations AptitudeExamination (fee applies),• Four documented hours of respiratory care careershadowing with a respiratory therapist in a hospitalsetting,• Two letters of recommendation from current employersor teachers,• Satisfactory physical examination,• Child abuse history clearance (fee applies),• Satisfactory results of a screening for illegal druguse,• Criminal background clearance,• Documentation of individual malpractice insurance asrequired,* and• $200 non-refundable deposit to UPMC Northwest byend of first Fall Semester*Students will purchase their own individual malpracticeinsurance policies in the amount of one million dollars($1,000,000) for each claim and three million dollars($3,000,000) in the aggregate.
