<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> of Pennsylvania 193SPED 411: Educational Assessment Practicum 1 s.h.Participants conduct a child study in a school setting by selecting, acquiring, analyzing, and synthesizing information needed foreducational decision-making regarding an individual with disabilities or with a suspected disability, and using the results to developan educational intervention plan. Prerequisite: SPED 320. Each semester.SPED 415: Instructional Development and Strategies for Mildly / Moderately Handicapped 3 s.h.Participants engage in the process of individualizing instruction for individuals with mild to moderate disabilities, including:designing basic instructional sequences utilizing behavioral objectives, matching technology and learner and goal characteristics,identifying appropriate instructional strategies, and evaluating the effectiveness of instruction. Multicultural education is addressed.Prerequisites: SPED 320; ELED 323, 324 (rehabilitative science majors exempted). Each semester.SPED 416: Clinical Teaching Practicum in Classrooms for Students with Mild Disabilities 3 s.h.This is the study of individualizing instruction for students with mild disabilities. It involves designing basic instructional sequencesutilizing behavioral objectives, matching media, learner, and goal characteristics, and evaluating the effectiveness of instruction.Prerequisites: SPED 320, 360, 380, and 381. Must be taken concurrently with SPED 415. Each semester.SPED 418: Exceptionalities in the Regular Classroom 3 s.h.Prepares students to deal with the nature and needs of the exceptional person in a regular classroom. Examines contemporary methodsof identification, services for the exceptional individual, and legal aspects of the least restrictive environment. Each semester.SPED 420: Instructional Development and Strategies forS severely /Profoundly Multi-handicapped 3 s.h.Participants engage in the process of individualizing instruction for individuals with severe/profound multiple disabilities, including:designing basic instructional sequences using behavioral objectives, technology, learner and goal characteristics; identifying appropriateinstructional strategies; and evaluating the effectiveness of instruction. Prerequisites: SPED 320; ELED 323, 324 (rehabilitative sciencemajors exempted). Each semester.SPED 421:Clinical Practicum for Persons with Moderate, Severe,and/or Multiple Disabilities3 s.h.This practicum places preservice teachers into field settings involving people with moderate, severe, and/or multiple disabilitieswho will use an individualized independence curriculum. Preservice teachers will implement basic instructional sequences utilizingbehavioral objectives, matching instruction with learner and goal characteristics, identifying appropriate instructional strategies, andevaluating the effectiveness of instruction. Prerequisites: SPED 320, 360, 380, and 381. Must be taken concurrently with SPED 420.Each semester.SPED 422: Special Education Classroom Administration 3 s.h.In addition to mastering instructional strategies and curricular content, today’s special education teachers are required to beknowledgeable about various theories, policies, and procedures necessary for the complex daily administration of the special educationprogram. Competencies included in this course will be: adapting the classroom environment to meet the physical, academic, andemotional needs of students; classroom management techniques; development of the IEP, behavior and transition plans; and collaborationwith other professionals, paraprofessionals, and parents. Prerequisites: SPED 320, 360, 380, 381. Each semester.SPED 440: Instructional Development and Strategies for Culturally Different Children 3 s.h.A study of the process of individualizing instruction for children who are not members of the dominant culture and whose culturalmembership significantly influences the educational process and school performance. Involves designing basic instructional sequences,selecting and matching media with learner and goal characteristics, identifying culture-appropriate instructional strategies, andevaluating the effectiveness of instruction. Summer only, on demand.SPED 441: Teaching Students with Disabilities in the Secondary Classroom 3 s.h.Prepares educators with the skills and knowledge to deliver and support instruction to students with disabilities in secondaryclassroom settings. Prerequisites: SPED 418.SPED 442: Differentiating Instruction in Inclusive Settings 3 s.h.Focuses on planning, designing, and delivering differentiated instruction to an increasingly diverse general education population,including students with disabilities, students who are gifted, students at risk, and students with cultural differences. Prerequisites:SPED 418.SPED 443: Prevention and Treatment of Academic and Learning Problems 3 s.h.Reviews the practice of prevention and intervention in dealing with students who are academically deficient, including responseeto-intervention,scientifically-based instruction, and the teacher, learner, curriculum interface. Prerequisites: SPED 418.SPED 450: Student Teaching 6-12 s.h.Observation and participation in teaching students with disabilities and in activities related to the performance of a teacher’s work.Prerequisites: SPED 320, 415, 416, 420, 421, and 422.SPED 455: Professional Seminar 2 s.h.Examines problems, practices, and regulations attending student teaching professional experiences. Coordinates the student teachingprogram with the educational objectives of the student teaching centers. Examines Pennsylvania school laws relevant to the work ofthe beginning special educator. Includes practical interpretations of professional ethics and the functions of professional organizations.Limited to student teachers. Each semester.SPED 499: Independent Studies in Special Education 1-3 s.h.Provides students with an opportunity to explore an area of special needs or interest in special education in-depth under the supervisionof a faculty member of the department. Students must develop a proposed study plan and secure the approval of the department chairprior to registration.
