Hughes Memorial Scholarship: Etablished with the Fundfor the Advancement of the State System of Higher Education to honorMr. Hughes, a founding member of the Board of Governors, to providerecognition and financial assistance to first year students at State SystemInstitutions who reside in Philadelphia and have attended certain Philadelphiahigh schools. Nominees will be selected via admissions files andare required to write an essay and submit a letter of recommendation.Notification process usually occurs in April.Interhall Award: These scholarships are available to residence hallstudents who have contributed positively to the residence hall environment.For further information contact the advisor to Interhall Councilat 814-393-2355.M.M. and Minnie H. Kaufman Leadership Scholarships: Thisscholarship established by Miss Virginia Kaufman (’37) in honor of herparents. Scholarships are available to freshmen on a one-time basis. Pastwinners have a minimum SAT total score of 1200 (critical reasoning andmathematics component) and are in the upper 10 percent of his or herhigh school graduating class. Amounts vary. Students are reviewed forthis scholarship upon receipt of their admission materials; no scholarshipapplication is required. All awards offered prior to March 1.Clara Louise Kiser Memorial Fund Scholarship: Scholarships, notlimited in number or amount, for students graduating from the <strong>Clarion</strong>Area School District. The scholarships are awarded according to financialneed to students planning to attend college or vocational school. Kuhn Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship establishedby family and friends of Dr. Kuhn, former Provost of <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates academicachievement, high school and community involvement as well as aneclectic array of interests. Selection will be done via admissions materials.Award offered prior to March 1.Sonja and Chuck Leach Leadership Scholarship: This scholarshipestablished by Mr. and Mrs. Leach to help students pursue their life goals.The scholarship is available to a new freshman on a one-time basis. Pastwinners have a minimum SAT total score of 1200 (critical reasoning andmathematics component) and are in the upper 10 percent of his or herhigh school graduating class. Amounts vary. All awards offered prior to March 1.Margaret and Irvin Lesher Foundation Scholarships: Scholarships,not limited in number and not specified in amount, granted onlyto graduates of Union Joint High School. Deadline forsubmission of application is April 15.Clarence and Janet Lesser Scholarships: The Lesser Trust Fundprovides scholarships to successful students in the areas of theatre, art,music, and athletics. High school students who have exhibited highinterest and achievement in these areas are urged to apply. Applicationfor consideration needs to be submitted prior to April 1. Selection isbased upon talent, academic promise, and leadership potential. Awardsmay be continued in subsequent years at the discretion of the selectioncommittee, subject to the availability of funds. Contact the FinancialAid Office at 814-393-2315 for additional information.Linnan/Brown Recognition Scholarship: This scholarship establishedby Tony Linnan, Class of 1989 and Kathy Linnan, Class of 1973,in recognition of their parents George & Virginia Linnan and Dale &Mary Lou Brown. Eligible candidates must be a full-time student, haveearned a minimum of 32 credits toward the completion of a specificbaccalaureate degree, have a grade point average of 3.0 in the previoussemester, be a Pennsylvania resident, and have financial need asdemonstrated by the filing of the FAFSA form. Students must submitletter of interest and resume of college experiences to Sue McMillen c/oAdmissions. Deadline for consideration is March 17.Ken,’52 and Joan Miller Scholarship: This award is in honor ofJoan and Ken Miller who was one of the founding donors of tte <strong>Clarion</strong><strong>University</strong> Foundation. To be considered, a student must have completedFAFSA, have a minimum 2.8 grade-point average in high school andmust maintain a 2.8 QPA while a student at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> workingtoward an academic degree. The committee will award scholarshipsaccording to the following preferences: Applicants who are members orchildren of members of Zion Lutheran Church in Shannondale, Pa. arefirst preference; residents of <strong>Clarion</strong> County, residents of Forest County,residents of Jefferson County, and residents of Armstrong County, aresecond through fifth preferences. In regards to applicants who are membersof Zion Lutheran Church or children of members, there shall be norestrictions for class rank, grade-point average, or years of eligibility.Dean James D. Moore Scholarship: Scholarships in memory ofMr. Moore, dean of academic affairs at <strong>Clarion</strong> from 1943 to 1972, areavailable to members of the university’s Student Senate. Candidatesare evaluated on the basis of academic achievement and leadership. Forfurther information contact the vice president for student and universityaffairs at 814-393-2351.John Mochnick Honors Program Scholarships: Created by theestate of John Mochnick to provide scholarships for academically talentedstudents. Students who are accepted into the Honors Program byMarch 15 of their senior year in high school are automatically consideredfor this scholarship. Outstanding grades in challenging curriculum, SATtotal scores, college major interest, and unique experiences/abilities, areall considered by the Director of Honors Program committee.John Mochnick/ Penn Trafford Leadership Scholarship: Thisleadership scholarship was established for high achieving students entering<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> from Penn-Trafford High School. Mr. Mochnickhad great affection for the Penn-Trafford School District. Past winnershave a minimum SAT total score of 1100 (critical reasoning and mathematicscomponent) and are in the upper 10 percent of his or her highschool graduating class. Amounts vary. Students are reviewed for thescholarship upon receipt of their admission materials; no scholarshipapplication is required. All awards offered prior to March 1.New Castle Wolves Club Scholarship: This scholarship establishedby the National Association of Wolves–New Castle Club to provideassistance to <strong>Clarion</strong> students from Lawrence County. Candidates mustbe full time students and must have graduated in the upper two-fifthsof their high school class. Students are eligible to receive the award insubsequent years providing they remain in good academic standing.Candidates will be considered via their admission materials, and financialneed. Contact your high school guidance office for further informationand scholarship application form. Application deadline is April 5.The Panos and Pavlos Award: Established by Mr. Panos Theodoridis,Class of 1990 and Pavlos Ignatiades, Class of 1986 & 1988, forinternational students originating from Greece or Cyprus. For consideration,contact the <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> International Office.The Pay it Forward Scholarship: Established by James Staab, a1970 graduate of <strong>Clarion</strong> Limestone High School, and Sally (Harris)Staab, a 1972 graduate of Keystone Oaks High School. The purpose ofthe scholarship is to recognize an entering <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> studentwho has graduated from one of the aforementioned schools who clearlyunderstands and demonstrates the concept of Pay It Forward. To be eligiblefor the scholarship, students must have a minimum graduating pointaverage from high school of 2.75, and minimum S.A.T. total score of900 (critical reasoning and mathematics component) (A.C.T. compositeequivalent is 19). Applicants will be asked to submit a short essay, notto exceed one page, on their concept of Pay It Forward.” Applicants forthe scholarship must submit their application along with their essay onor before April 1. Nair Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society Scholarship(Freshmen): The <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> chapter of Phi Sigma, amember of the Association of College Honor Societies, offers one cashaward each year. The candidate must be a member of the Honor Society,which requires a minimum 3.5 QPA after one or two semesters. Selectionis based on academic record and participation in extracurricularactivities.
